The Third Annual JHO Pig O Rama went over with a bang during the weekend of May 12 -14, as 39 hunters (JHO members and friends) convened in Lebec, CA in pursuit of wild hogs. The hunt took place on the South Area of the Tejon Ranch.

Over the course of the weekend, 19 hogs were taken by the JHO hunters for a 49% success rate. The largest hog taken was a calico boar with a field-dressed weight of 290 pounds. Scott Jagerman of Antioch, CA was the lucky hunter. Average field-dressed weight for the rest of the hogs was around 130lbs, with a range from 180lbs to 46 lbs.

Several hunters took their first hogs on the trip, and for at least two of the successful hunters, Jesse Ostler and Rich Waldren, their hogs represented their first big-game harvest ever.

While the full moon and high mid-day temperatures seemed to keep pig movements to a minimum, most hunters reported seeing good numbers of hogs. Prime times for hunting were the early evening hours, although several hogs were killed during the morning hunts. Most hunters were back in camp at mid-day due to the heat. However, Dennis Coppock showed the value of persistence and staying in the field with his 11:40am hog.

Most of the Tejon Ranch veterans agreed that the ranch was in excellent shape this year, following the heavy winter rains. Food and water are abundant, and most of the hogs taken over the weekend carried heavy layers of fat.

Planning for the 2007 JHO Pig-O-Rama is underway, and dates will be announced on the JHO Hog Hunting Forum as soon as they are finalized.
