BLM
Hunting is permitted on public lands administered by the
Bureau of Land Management - but some areas are closed to hunting and
shooting. State of California hunting regulations are enforced on
Federal lands. Hunters are required to follow all state and local laws
and ordinances which relate to the use of firearms, or to the taking of
game.
Target Shooting is allowed on public lands - but some areas
are closed to shooting. However, you must provide your own
targets and remove your debris before you leave the site. It is
illegal to shoot at trees, signs, outbuildings, or other objects on
Federal lands that are for the public's enjoyment. The Bureau of Land
Management adheres to the guidelines issued by the State of California,
Department of Justice, regarding the types of weapons allowed for use
on the public lands. Use of assault weapons is not permitted.
Public roads must be utilized to gain access to the public
lands. Crossing private lands to access public lands is not
permitted unless you obtain permission from the private
landowner. Our surface management maps may assist you in locating
Federal lands.
Safety - Safe and prudent actions should be followed at all
times. Be aware of the other public land visitors who may be
utilizing the same areas for other recreational uses, i.e., camping,
hiking, biking, and rock-hounding. If you have questions regarding
areas that may be appropriate for hunting or shooting, you should
contact the BLM Field or District Office having jurisdiction for the
area:
Bureau of Land Management Maps and information packets cost
$4.00. They have an index for all their maps for free, make sure and
get that so you'll know what map names you're after. Make sure and get
the land status management maps which help assist you in locating
Federal lands. BLM calls them "Surface and Mineral Ownership Maps".
These maps come in 2 editions, "Surface" and "Surface/Mineral". Get the
"Surface/Mineral" version. The map scale is 1:100,000. For the southern
California deserts the BLM maps are called "Desert Access Guide Maps".
There is also a free index for the Desert Access Maps and the maps are
1:100,000 in scale.
If you know what BLM map you need, send check or money order payable
to Department of Interior- BLM and send to: Bureau of Land Management,
2800 Cottage Way, Room W-1834, Sacramento, CA 95825-1886. Please

Stockdale Mountain
BLM - Monterey Co. E-mail from Joe about Stockdale Mountain. I was
out at Stockdale Mt. getting info. What I found out from residents up
there was scary. The only access is a narrow point off of Slack Canyon.
Rd. The boundaries are not marked clearly! Mr. Kester owns all land
around the area and patrols it often and Fish and Game also roams
through daily. I was told by one of the outfitters on your page (one I
trust and have a personal relationship with) up there that this area is
pretty much a trap for hunters. I was told that going up there is just
cause for trouble. There are no friendly warnings, no matter what game
is being pursued. I hear that many hunters are sighted for poaching
even when they are not meaning to do so. I suggest that you post a
warning on your site for ALL TO BEWARE! and to know their location at
all times. This area does have lots of hogs, but the terrain is thick
with brush and hunters get in trouble when they look for a clearing
(Kester's land). I suggest using a topo map with GPS in this area, and
talking to DFG for boundaries. By the way, Kester is an outfitter and
guide. Thanx Joe.

County
Shooting Regulations
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Both the San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County Shooting Area Maps are
outdated and we were asked to pull them off the website here. San Bernardino County is in the
process of redoing their shooting map. As of the last commission meeting in May 2009 they
DO NOT have any idea when the new county shooting map will be released.
LOS ANGELES COUNTY
8/15/08. I talked to John Hybarger today who is the Chairperson for L.A.
County Fish & Game Commission about the L.A. County Shooting Area Map. He said to get the
ball rolling for a new shooting area map we need to get folks to write a letter to the L.A.
County Fish & Game commission asking for the new map to be redrawn and printed like San
Bernardino County just did with their shooting area map.
If you would like L.A. County to redo their map please write the commission at:
L.A. County Fish & Game Commission

Gun Ranges and

11/3/98 .... The San Bernardino Forest has reopened 4
shooting ranges. The ban on target shooting back in September, 1997 was
because of a fire blamed on target shooters south of Running Springs.
The three areas legal to target shoot are: Manzanita Flats on
Forest Road 1N09 south of Running Springs, Big Pine Flats Northwest
of Big Bear Lake,
and Arrastre off Highway 38 east of Big Bear Lake. The range at
Cactus Flats is closed due to the damage to the surrounding
vegetation that the Forest officials deemed needed protection. Lightning Gulch off Highway 38 near Heartbar is also closed. The San
Jacinto Mountain areas will also be legal to target shoot in. The
shooting range at Lytle Creek is to be opened any day. For a detailed
map of the shotgun only hunting areas, call the San Bernardino County
Fire Special Districts office at PH# 909-387-5940 (157 W. 5th Street,
2nd Floor, San Bernardino, CA 92415-0451). While the Forest Service has
designated four areas for target shooting, the hours of shooting in
these areas is regulated. Under the forest management plan, you,
as a shooter, you must first contact the governing body, the Forest
Service, prior to use of the designated area. Upon contact, you
will be given an activity level report rating which dictates the hours
you will be permitted to shoot in your chosen area.

U. S. National
Forest
Any hiker, hunter, groups or other visitors with motor vehicles
parked anywhere in the National Forest will need to have a pass clearly
displayed in the vehicle. Passes are available at Forest Service
offices, by mail and from specified vendors like REI, Turner's
Outdoorsman and Big 5. A pass will not be needed when traveling through
the forest, but not stopping. A pass is not required for people
stopping for information at Ranger stations, visitor centers and other
Forest Service Offices. The pass is a placard you hang from your
mirror. You can get an additional vehicle sticker pass for $4.00 more
and tape it inside your window if you forget to hang the placard like I
do. And yes, the Forest Service people are checking vehicles every day,
so be sure to display it, or you get the citation on your windshield.
If you forget and get cited, you just mail the citation in with your
pass number written on it. For more information about the National
Forest Adventure Pass, call the local Forest Service Offices listed
