1 Hog seen No hogs down....

Went out today for a early moring hunt. Got to the property right before sunrise and got into a spot I've seen lots of signs. With in minutes of getting to the spot we hear several pigs grunting and rooting under a oak tree. Right for the right lighting as we try to get into a good shooting position. We get close to the tree and hear one hog coming right at us. I get to full draw and the pig comes out of the trees some 20 yards ahead of me. I was unable to take the shot since the boar was facing me. He see's me and runs off a little. My little brother gets around to where the boar headed and gets a nice broadside look on the hog but was shaking to bad to get his release on the bow. So off goes the hog. But was awesome to have our hearts pumping out of our cheats.

Shouldve shot em in the head. What better shot then a head shot?

IMO a head shot with a bow is asking for trouble! Too much chance of not getting good penetration and just crippling it. I think you did the right thing.

my favorite quote....."HEAD SHOTS WORK"....from 20 yards my bro stuck one right between the eyes. it dropped in its tracks and looked pretty cool.

^^ have seen it done. Unless your shooting a Mattel plastic bow and arrows with suction cups at the end youll get plenty of penetration.

I was nerves about taken that shot. Glad I passed would rather have a nice broadside or quarting away shot for my first shot. But thanks for the advice.

Yes I have seen it done, and the results were mixed. I have seen several pigs drop instantly from a perfect head shot, but have also spent numerous hours trying to recover poorly shot pigs with ugly glancing wounds. Look at the skull make up of a pig and you'll see the chances of a deflection are very high. If you hit them perfect it works, otherwise you have a serious mess on your hands. I am not even an advocate of the facing you head shot with a rifle. To each their own, but I strongly feel Mlindsay did the right thing by holding off. I have killed many pigs with my bow, and unfortunately have lost a few. The lost ones bothered me greatly. His decision to hold off and hope for a better shot tells me that he has the patience and restraint of a good bowhunter. If the shot doesn't feel right I would always rather let the animal walk and hope for another chance in the future.

Thank you guys very much for the piece of mind. It was very thrilling just to get that close on the animal. Going back out in the morning hopefully I can get a good shot and drop me first game animal of my life...

kudos for passing on the shot.

heat of the moment, i cant say i would have done the same. at 20 yards.i could "get one in there"..honestly, i probably would have not shot.

there is a better shot, hitting the shoulder in front behind the boston butt. but you have to have a relaxed animal to even try it. and animals are rarely relaxed staring at a chattering hunter..

Thank you Sancho. I went out again today and heard some moving around on below me but it was to dark to see where they where so I was unable to ger on top of them. Had to cut the hunt short as I started coming down with the flu and my little brother's back started to hurt him. I'm very grateful that I get to be out there and enjoy the beautiful of the out doors. God bless all OUR Men and Women fighting over seas.
