I want to take my soon to be 12 yr old son on his first hog hunt without breaking the bank. I have not hunted Fort Hunter Liggett in years is it worth it or too crowed for a young hunter? Tejon seems pricey these days.

I have yet to have sucess at the Ft but that is not to say they are not there. I find that most of the pigs are taken with shotgun or Muzzy. Some people do take them with long rifles but it seems to be more hit or miss. I just purchased a slug gun and will be hitting the Ft in early Feb. There are some great guides in the area ranging in price, much more reasonable then Tejon. They are listed in the guides portion of the sight. Honestly though any day with my dad was awesome and I am sure your son will think the same thing for years to come.

I'd try FHL Caltex. It takes some time to learn the fort and where the pigs like to hang out. If no luck on the hogs you can always grab the shotgun and chase some quail or call coyotes to break up the day. Also look into Vandernberg AFB is you are military or retired military.

It has been a years since I last hunted the Fort. However, I have friends who still hunt FHL. Training Area (TA) 29 is alway good Shotgun/ML area. TA-25 I do not know if it is still rifle or they changed it to ML, TA 30, TA 10-13 and TA 7.

I've shot pigs in TA 29 and 25. Of course TA-25 you may need 4x4 capability due to the rain the roads get pretty challenging to drive. TA-29 walk-ins along with TA-30.

Hope this helps ya out.

Back in October, a guy took his son to FHL to try and get first hog for son. It was their first time there and they kinda got lost trying to find their hunting area. Getting lost resulted with the son putting a clean kill shot on the biggest boar in the group of about 15 hogs........Zip mouth for now.

All joking aside getting lost is pretty easy. The only time the wardens have been hard asses was when I was up for the second weekend of deer season. Totally understandable though. I have had trouble finding my training area and were the boundries are. Been there 5 or 6 times so far and have learned most of the training areas. The maps they give you are not to scale, have no eastings or northings and are really not to scale. My new goal is to 1:25 strip map of the base and all training areas from my S-2 as we train there every now and then. If they are not sensitive I will post them or the ones that I can when I get off leave next week. You could try google earth and use the maps here on the website to create training area overlays. That is were the 2 will probably get the maps from anyways I just want to save myself the trouble making the Cpl do it for me :)
