I decided to chime in finally. This was my first hog and first kill for that matter. I have one other hog under my belt, but you always remember your first. I shot this hog on a ranch in Santa Maria. We had hunted the evening before and had no luck. The next morning we drove onto the ranch and decided to check a spot that had produced in the past. Sure enough, there was about 10 pigs eating there way back into the hills. We walked a ravine and circled around the group. I then went on a belly crawl for about 50 yards through cow shit until I got to an old barbed wire fence. I got myself ready and started playing mind games with myself. Instead of taking a breath and pulling the trigger, I kept saying to myself, "Don't miss this." My heart was thumping out of my chest. I finally squeezed one off and watched him run about 30 yrds and drop dead. I was not sure about how I was going to feel as i had never killed anything other than a few bird assassinations with a pellet gun. When I walked up to him I could not stop smiling. To make it even more special, I killed him with my great grandpa's deer rifle. It was an old Remington 30.06. You can see how old it is by the scope that is on it. My dad referred to it as the deer slayer, but now it was a hog slayer. I love reading what you guys have to say and have learned a lot from these boards. I am hooked!!! The dogs in the picture only made it out of the truck to sniff the hog and take a pic with me.

sounds like "Hog Slayer" is fitting and would make your grandfather proud. :smiley_green_with_e

Flatbroke-
I have no idea about the vests, sorry. I got my second hog over the summer in Redding. I was lucky enough to tag along on a hunt with a former student of mine and his dad. It was the second day of hunting and i had missed on one the day earlier. I was feeling the pressure of missing the day before big time. The land owner had shot a small hog and was going through the steps of field dressing with me. I just happened to look up and saw a hog crusing down the path all by himself. I picked up my gun and took aim at him. He was about 70 yards away and a liitle up hill. I shot and he flinched a little but didn't do much. I chambered another and he took off running. I got him in my scope and shot just in front of him. I had one bullet left in my gun. I was not going to lose this one so I took off running up the hill after him. When I got to the top of the hill he was at the bottom and walking slowley. I called myself a few choice names, took aim and hit him right behind his ear and dropped him. I did a few fist pumps and walked down with the other guys to check him out. I swore that I hit him the first time and I did. I shot a hole right threw his ear. I don't have a didital copy, but I have a cool picture with my former student with his hog and me wiith mine. It freaks a lot of my preppy Southern Cal students out, but I love it!
