Decided to go try chasing piggies at Ft Hunter Liggett. It's been a long layoff since my last trip to Tejon. Anyway spent all day Saturday driving, glassing ,exploring all the open areas. Lots of deer, elk, turkey, quail, dove, didn't find any pigs. Got some Intel where the pigs were being seen. So set up in that area Until dark but still no pigs. Checked that same area early Sunday morning, no pigs. Spent the rest of the afternoon exploring more of the open zones. First time seeing a bull elk running, man what a sight!
With no better plan, went back to the area with all the pig sign. Climbed to the top of the highest hill and glassed for a while then headed down to some thick brush with some pig tunnels I had spotted earlier. The plan was to sit and wait like I used to do at Tejon. As I'm heading down the hill to the thick stuff, a piggie steps out. I glass him to make sure, don't know why because I was sure, lol. First pig surprise I guess. Throw up my rifle And slip the safety off. He squirts into the bush before I can fire a shot. So I sit down to wait because I know he'll come out again. About two minutes go by and out steps a nice big black and a smaller grey. I throw up the rifle, slip the safety and squeeze off a shot at the black one just before he goes behind a bush. Only problem is I already slipped the safety off! So I really slipped the safety back on... (Idiot) So I point my rifle to the other side of the bush to get the shot when they come out, only they catch my sent and bolt! Game over. Oh well, great time. Will definitely go again. Gotta learn how to use my weapon.

FHL Is paradise for hunters. Play on words about the name but a good omen.

It used to be a Herst ranch until the gov't bought it pre WW2.

The Spanish had built a mission there earlier because it was such a beautiful mountain meadow with 2 rivers flowing thru it.

Paradise.

"Always keep your safety on and your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot."

You are lucky that you did not have an accident.

Nice story though. Reminds me of what I have been missing because I cannot get away from work before Oct 15 at the earliest.

Thank you.

Be safe.
