CHEYENNE -- Most of Wyoming’s 300,000 hunters and anglers will be accompanied by a somewhat impressionistic rendition of a mountain lion in 2004

"Untamed" a pastel mountain lion painting by Dustin Van Wechel of Glenvil, Neb. will be featured on the 2004 conservation stamp. The painting won the 20th annual competition, which was judged April 4 at the State Museum in Cheyenne.

"Dustin is an excellent full-time artist who is a first-time entrant is this competition,” said Mary Link, competition coordinator. “His pastel will reproduce very well onto the stamp and limited editions prints. The colors are rich, composition was perfect and the work depicts the mountain lion very well."

The painting earned Van Wechel $2,500 and will be featured on the 2004 conservation stamp.

Other artists placing in the competition: 2nd – Paul Kay, Sandy, Utah $1,500; 3rd – Eleazar Saenz, Monterrey, Mexico $1,000; 4th – Peter Eades, Lakewood, Colo. $500; 5th – Kyle Sims, Billings, Mont. $250.

Honorable Mentions went to Bernie Jensen, Afton; Greg Wilson, Draper, Utah; Garth Helgesen, Roy, Utah; Michael Romney, Farmington, Utah; and Chad Poppleton, Hyrum, Utah. The contest generated 164 entries from 34 different states and Mexico. That included 43 Wyoming entries, including seven placing in the Top 40. Seventy entries were from Rocky Mountain states.

“The number of Wyoming entries was the highest we’ve received in the history of the contest,” Link said.

The paintings are on display at the museum through May 24. From there the "Top 40" entries travel to:

Sheridan County Fullmer Library Art Gallery Sheridan June 5-30
Washakie Museum Worland July 7-29
Central Wyo. College Robert A. Peck Art Center Riverton Aug. 1-27
Campbell County Library Art Gallery Gillette Sept. 2 – Oct. 1

Free "Mountain Lions in Wyoming" publications will be available at these summer art shows

All but the first place painting can be purchased at the shows. Next year, Van Wechel’s entry will join previous first place winners on display at the Game and Fish Department's Cheyenne office. His painting can be viewed on the G&F Web site at http://gf.state.wy.us

Next year the burrowing owl will be the competition subject.
