Thanks Chuck-- now all I need to find is a good spot to go Elk hunting... my buddy that loved up near Meeker, CO passed away a couple of years ago (cancer got him)and now I'm unfamiliar with other than his property that I no longer have access to... My bro and I are both vets, he retired and lives on East coast and I'm out on West coast-- we would like to meet somewhere in between for a Elk good hunt. Any ideas and/or suggestions? We have equipment but limited on $$, so outfitter trip is likely not in the cards.
If they still have four seasons, the middle two should have OTC bull tags. Now your probably not going to kill a huge 350 class 6X6, but I saw lots of legal bulls a few years ago. When I hunted there the antler point restriction was 4 point or better on one side. OTC tags are easy and pretty much garauntee you a tag.
Anyways, we hunted just north, east and west of Pagosa Springs CO. SW CO. Lost of public land about 10-15 miles outside of town. We used to hunt the grand mesa for deer, but that was even longer ago and I dont remember seeing a whole lot of elk. Some of the biggest elk herds are around the areas of 66-67 (this was about 10 years ago). It maybe a little off now. 77,78,751,771, are units I hunted in.
Good luck, my dad is a retired Marine so I dont mind helping other vets.
