My buddy drew the grizzly bull elk hunt and another buddy‘s daughter drew the fhl junior either sex deer hunt. Me and my kids got skunked, despite having a lot of points.

I drew a cow tag, had 8 points. Thanksgiving weekend.
Now I am scrambling to find out what I got myself into here :)

Ya I don't know how it goes. Brother in law had two more points than me, we both put in for the same hunt and he did not draw. Thankfully, actually. One is plenty, particularly for being the very first time there.

I have applied quite a few times for a San Luis bull but the odds to draw are terrible.

The three hunters (one being a Jr. Hunter) were all skunked for elk draws and SHARE hunt draws. We put in for every SHARE hunt there was too.

Me and my kids just got skunked on 3 SHARE hunts too. Oh well, we’ve been lucky in the past with some memorable draw hunts. Now onto smokey, hot archery season.

Everyone puts in for Share hunts now, so they are mostly for sharing one's money. I did draw a deer share hunt back in 2014, but nothing since.

California's share hunts and Jr elk hunts have real long odds. If you have Jr hunters and want to get them an antlerless elk tag, put in for Az. It's super cheap to apply (was $15 for my kids), even for non-res. If you win, the actually tag is cheap (my kids $60). Once they have hunter safety card, kids can start applying as early as age 10. If you start em early, they are guaranteed to draw by age 18. And if you live in Southern Cal, the drive to the Az hunt areas isn't any farther than going to Norcal (maybe less).

Totally agree on junior hunts. My kids have gotten more deer and a hog on junior hunts than I’ve gotten ever. Love or hate dfw, they do a decent job for the kids.
