Nope, I have max points for elk but didn't get my Grizzly Bull tag. Put my dad and wife in for Grizzly cow tags, no joy there either.

My dad and I drew the 301 Marble Mountains cow hunt this year. We have one less than max points and changed our plan to try and draw any elk tag, I just didn't think it would happen this year. Now I'm trying to find out how I am going to get my dad up there and get a hunt in.

If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all!

after max points plus 5 years I got my grizzly island bull tag. I feel I won the mega millions.

Congrats! My dad had it two years ago and I helped him do all the scouting and during the hunt. I wrote it up so go back and find that post. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Well, I got lucky (again). My name is Steve Cain and I posted my G3 hunt story back in December 2012, with a pic of my buck and a (long) account detailing the hunt/where I went/how I did/what I used.
I just found out that I drew a 2017 Northwestern 355 Roosevelt elk - "any Bull" tag. I had max points and have been trying to get a tag for quite a while. This will probably be my one and only elk hunt in California in this lifetime, so I'm wondering if anyone out there has any advice on where to hunt up in that corner of the state. I'd really like to get this tag filled without having to hire a guide/outfitter, in fact I can't quite afford to hire a full-on guided elk hunt right now anyways. I don't mind putting in the hiking/driving/glassing effort and both of my kids attend HSU in Arcata, so they would be tagging along on days that they didn't have class (or work). Have gutted, skinned, quartered and packed out many deer, a few elk (2 of my own, a few of my buddies), Dall sheep (do it yourself hunt in Alaska), black bears, etc., and don't want to go the guided route if I don't have to. Plus it's damn expensive.
Anyway, I know that Roosevelt elk is a whole different monster and the terrain is steep and jungle-like. I plan on having about 2 weeks to try to get one and was hoping to get a few pointers/leads on any areas in this zone that held decent concentrations of elk that I could maybe get into.
Was also wondering if anyone knows how to go about finding a list or lists of private landowners and/or timber companies that allow hunting on their property even if it included a "trespass fee". I know it's the thing nowadays and I'm not averse to paying a fee if I have to as long it's on some ground that has been known to have decent elk numbers. I still want to do my own hunting though, hope anyone reading this understands. Am getting close to retirement and this will be my only shot at an elk in CA.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Steve
