I haven't used it on javenlina but I have shoot them. I used a 223 in africa and shot many small and large antelope. I used 60grain nosler partitions when the animals reach about 60+ pounds you are really pushing the capabilities of that round. I shot many duiker with it with great results. I also shot a impala that ran a few hundered yards and three kuduy making head and nech shots the one I hit in the chest ran off

. I watched my dad shoot two javes in Texas with a 30-06 and they both ran off. They may be small but they are tuff. I would not really recomend shooting them with a 223. It is a good varmit round and small game but I would not recomend anyone to hunt larger game than coyotes, or small antelope ( african variety) with this round. Please use something larger.

I will be eaten alive for this but I would not recomend a 243 iether. In my expereance with them the animals run around befor they die And I don't want to chase things in the brush with all the snakes in Texas. I am not a fan of the 243 sorry. I shoot a 270 for years and just resently moved into a 300 win. I would say that 30 cal has more knock down than the 270 or less. Hope this helps and this is only one persons opinion.

I have hunted Javelina many years with a Thompson Contender .223, killed lots of them. I have never had a problem knocking them down with the .223 Definitely recommend it.

With good shot placement it should be just fine. But they are extrememly tough critters. Much tougher than their small size would lead you to believe. Pick a good shot.

Tom – I’m in the same boat as you. I have used a 270 since I was 12 and bought a 300 Win a few years ago and that’s all I use now. I’m trying to go to TX or AZ this year and want to take a Javenlina and get a full body mount. I’m just thinking that the 300 will make too big of a hole.

Anyone know a good outfitter in TX or has anyone tried hunting on the Indian Resv. in AZ?

I think they could be tsken with a .22 hornet with a little carea and a good bullet, the only one I have taken was with a 40-90. I say carry on with about any .22 centerfire.

I loaded up some 70 grain Barnes in .223 for a buddy and he dropped in it's tracks a 200 pound boar with one shot, I think Javelina is more than doable with .223.

Since you are going to shoot them in the head anyway, it will be plenty gun. My late uncle shot them all the time with a .22 Hornet.
