Yeah, i'd say he's 25". I think ear tip to ear tip will run about 19-20". I took a buck a few years ago that was right at 20", he looks to be ear tip wide. Here's a pic, so maybe you can get a better judge of the buck, but I would put him at what your guessing. Great looking buck!
that looks a lot like the buck in my signature pic minus mines 4'' gaurds. They look alotta like. mine was 22.5'' but if I measure from corner to corner its bigger. I dont remember how big tho.
As I've said from the get go on this buck. Yes you are correct he is 25'' or better.
After all the pics being shown of this buck I wouldnt be totally suprised if somebody wanted to try out their luck and see if they are gonna be one of those trespassers you've talked about getting caught......
I was there Sat AM about 0800 and glassed these guys for awhile. The farm workers were driving hay balers, etc all around these bucks and they couldn't have cared less. They are so used to humans being around them they are like park deer. Anybody that would poach one of these guys would be a pretty low person in my book.
RW, was that you in the white p/u w/camper shell? I was in the green Ford p/u. Mike
No dought this is a huge blacktail, but I don't think he'd make 25". I shot a buck in his bed just like this one. I swore he would make 30". When I put the tape on him he was only 26". I would say this buck is ( and I am upping my previous guess) 23" maybe mabe but not more than 24". Great pics keep them coming.
MEF is right.. Any person that would try and shoot any of those bucks is NOT a hunter.. One thing I've noticed about poacher's is that they seem to get off more on the thrill of 'not getting caught' rather than the hunt itself.
I've hesitated everytime I've posted a picture of this guy, but he is so unbelievable for the species, I thought that everybody should or would want to enjoy looking at him as I do.
Remember: If I ever see this rack at a taxidermist shop, buck contest, etc.. I have plenty of photo's that will identify him..and I will!
Like MEF said, they are still wild, but have definately put their guard down over the years... It would not be much of a challenge..
MEF, that wasn't me.. I was in my buddy's 2004 F150 when I was taking this picture..Usually I am in a white Toyota(no camper shell).
Enjoy the pictures.
Oh yea.. I forgot.. He could be 24, but when I check him out real good in my binos. I always notice his G4's flare out a little.. Seems like he is around 24 at the inside of the main beams, but a little more if you measure straight accross from G4 to G4.. Who knows for sure..
Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Wow! What a crying shame they've lost their fear of humans. It would be indeed, a low down dirty scoundral that would poach one of these fine bucks. Fair chase is always best. They sure would look good in butcher paper though.
As always, great photos.
Now that they are hardhorned it is easier to get an idea of just HOW big they are... Not bad for Kalifornia... And I wouldn't be surprised if the big one gets wacked by a poacher. Up here where I live, any word that leaks out about BIG bucks usually leads to more poachers stories.
Heres a photo from the Wawona Golf Course right next to the road. This big guy is no longer with us. Someone might have gotten him in the Anderson flat Hunt a few years ago.
I thought I'd photographed him during the rut last year, but I just went back and looked at the photo's and I'm not sure..The buck from last year was in the 24 inch range and was a 4by4, but stronger in the front than this buck.. Neither one has much for eyeguards.. Could be the same buck..not too sure..
This year's buck has more mass than you can see in that photo.. He's not extremely heavy, but for sure not spindly either..
Here's one more picture of him..you can see his mass a little better in this photo..
