Great flat round I have taken hogs with a 150 grain bullet and there was not even a squeal out of em my friend got his first pig on my ranch two weeks ago with a .270 his dad bought 30 years ago and again it hit hard from 175 yards and dropped the hog within 25 yards after impact. For Coastal deer and pigs you can't go wrong with a .270 loaded with 150 grain bullets. I have a 30-06 and have seen em whacked with 30-30s and .300's you gotta find what you like and roll with it...

here we go again on the 270. Just fine for deer and hogs. 150 gr. good. flat shooting. ammo easy to find. shot placement is critical. good optics helps, blah blah blah blah blah! it's a good gun already.
I've shot the same one for over thirty years, and have killed as many or more critters then most of my friends. Buy one try it, If you don't like it buy something different next year, that's how we collect so many guns. just my opinion.

The .270 is a great all around load for what you describe you will hunt. Pick the right bullet and weight for the job and the one that shoots best in your gun.

.270 is a great gun. I use 130gr nosler's (until the ban) with it and never had a problem shooting pigs or deer. My dad has been shooting pigs and deer with his .270 with 130 gr for 30+ years.

Nothing wrong with the gun. Despite what some people say.....

BS - it's worthless and weak. I shot a chipmunk with a .270, and had to track it for a mile before finally losing it.

My dad used a .270 for years for pigs and deer. He never lost a single one.

pretty much know what the 270 is capable of I am just at a time where it may be practical for me to purchase a bolt action in a flat shooting round that can be bought at any gunshop or Walmart/Big 5 type store. I just ran into a few nice .270's and wanted some input from others. I now use a Marlin 35rem and also have a G2 in 358JDJ. In CA they most likely will pass a " liberal tree huggin" bill to make it illegal to use lead ammo for hunting big game, ya know incase one of the 3 condors that exsist may land and eat a dead pig or deer shot with lead ammo and die. NO 35rem Barns X and SSK warns of usung them in the Contender/G2 due to pressure problems. So I own 2 guns that may be usless to me for hunting this state(dont say just move...long story) and was thing of something like a 7mm mag, .270, 30-06, 308 or something else where ammo is easy to find and cheap. I know in those cal. there is solid copper boolits available. So... the idea thats been in my head this week is get rid of the TC G2 and replace with a bolt gun. Kinda a bummer as I have some $ put into the G2 but my rule is if a gun is gonna be in my safe it must earn a place ans at this point that is the one that would not be used, at least not in the near future.

Never get rid of oneof your guns. when you fill your safe, just buy another safe. Believe me she won't mind.

Were you using them Barnes bullets you've been pushing?

See what happens when you get the lead out!

Great round for anything here in Kali. I'm currently using 140 gr. A-frames and they really do the trick.
And remember that only real men hunt with the .270 Win. Them magnum calibers are for wimps.

The .270 Winchester is puh-lenty for deer and hogs. Just use tough construction bullets(NOW the soon to be NON-LEAD bullets only regulations coming up in the very near future). Personally, I would choose the 30-06, because the .308 caliber bullet is available up to 220 grns. and will wallop a thousand pound hogzilla without missing a beat. Just more versatiliity and availability in the .308 caliber bullets. 'Nuff said.

Larry, I think you are right. I looked up ammo prices and veriety and man, I know the 'ol 30-06 is the most popular but I realy didnt realize how many different factory styles were available let alone being some of the cheapest ammo too. I have always had cartridges that were less common but I may become an '06 owner now.

Troggy, you won't go wrong with either the 30-06 or the .270. Both are extremely versatile and both are plenty for almost anything you might hunt in North America ('cept maybe moose and grizzly bears).

30-06 gives an edge if you think you'll be spending a lot of time hunting larger animals like elk or moose, but both are excellent for hogs and deer.

Interesting, though, that you couldn't find Barnes ammo for the .35 Rem. I'm even loading them for my .44mag now.
