I was browsing through my old copys of Western outdoor news and I found this editorial/Pic concerning Calibers for hogs. I just thought it was interesting to share with out startin to much of a debate.
Looks like a bull barrel custom job. Probably deadly accurate and the guy probably knows how to use it. A 100 gr pill going 3000pfs right behind the ear and it's lights out! I know a guide whos killed 100'2 of hogs with a .257 roberts. Deadly in the right hands and with careful shot placement.
For versatility's sake, I still like more punch. The only animal I ever lost was a pig I drilled with a 25-06.
Something weird about that rifle, for a "guide". Appears like a Heavy Varmint weight barrel, long action Model 70, first .243's were built on long action, ( I believe short action .243 came out in 1984). Has a factory stock, and it appears it does not have a Varmint or target type scope, (small objective bell, no AO)? Perhaps the fence has more to do with it????
180Pilot,
You might wanna do just a tiny bit more research I have Remington Model 788 in 243win (1967)cal I bought for the wife in 1999. This gun is made in 1967. After buying my Remington 788 308win(1969) and saw good it shot I researched the model They use to call it the poor mens TACK DRIVER, because they were made and sold so cheap. I turned around and bought the 243 for the wife. Now in search of the rest of the 788's to finish my collection. There not made real pretty but 1/2-100yds in groups is nothing to sneeze about http://www.remington.com/library/history/f...e/model_788.asp
i know a few hunters who exclusively use 223 and 243 on california deer. as for pig, 243 might be undergun for a charging 300 lb boar.
with a 243, will you squeeze a round at a running boar? many here will say "no," but i bet you it's a different story when it actually happens out in the field (especially if it is public land). many public land hunters will not let a running boar run out of sight without squeezing a round.
i am more interest in the article above the picture. how can a california gun store not know of such rule?
Way back in the 70's and 80's,my father and 3 brother's & I all hunted with Rem 6MM,and we all shot plenty of pig's and deer,the largest was a 300# hog,with 1 shot,at 150 yd's. I up graded to a 30-06,in 1990,for out of state hunting,and so has 1 brother.I have 1 brother in Washington,that still hunt's with the 6Mm,and shot a whopper of a bear,at 100yd's,that was 340# and droped it in 1 shot.So I think the 6MM is a sweet rifle,just my
