Got back yesterday from hunting in AZ with ltDan, pickensCJ, XDHUNTER and Rem3006.
On friday we hiked to my favorite area and sat on a ridgetop ALL day waiting for the javies to show themselves. I figured that they were there but were bedded because the nights were down into the teens and the days were in the upper 70's.
While waiting, 2 other hunters showed up on the opposite ridge and glassed for about an hour, then suddenly one guy shot his rifle down the ravine between us. We were puzzled by his shot because they just stayed put and continued glassing in all directions. After several hours they slowly began hiking down the ravine toward where he had shot. Then they milled about and acted like they were hunting, glassing in all directions. After a good long while they hiked out carrying something, and when they passed it under a fence we saw that it was a coues deer.
Talk about ballsy, they saw us and yet poached a deer right in front of us. I guess they figured that we were'nt going to stay put all day, and also nobody could get a signal on a cell phone to turn them in. I'm certain that they were locals and knew that there's no phone signals out there.
With the poachers gone and less than an hour of light left, we deciding to start making the long trek back. We had put our gear away and strapped on our packs when Chuck Pickens takes one last look back with the naked eye and spots 5 javies right below us. I was frustrated because both ltDan and Chuck could see them but I couldn't.
We hiked down to get closer when a seperate group appears 115 yards up the hill from us. Dan shoots one and they scattered. We hiked up to where they were and I spot a lone javie just below the ridge top. I quickly fired an off-hand 89 yard shot with my 243, severing its spine. Dan continues searching for his javie in the thick cactus while Chuck crests the ridge to find all of the javies below him in the open. He downs a big one and spots Dan's javie limping away into the brush.
The next day they all returned to the same spot and XDHUNTER tags his javie. I'll let him tell his story.

Glass eye,
Congrats to all you guys! I feel like I'm missing out. While all of you were out there chasing javies, I'm laying in the hospital bed thinking of how you guys were doing. Damn I paid my license and tag fee for nothing! I will definately join you guys next year. Did Rem3006 get one?

I was shocked to learn that you couldn't make it because you got ill. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Dan was just gettiing over being sick and I was just begining to get ill. I knew I would get sick because my wife and kids took turns passing it around and I was the last one.
Ed, 3006 was the only one that never got a shot off.

L2h,
Wish you a speedy recovery. Glass eye you guys did well. The timing was wrong. Wish I could have join you guys. But the Big island was Beautiful. There was rootings all along the road side going towards laulahoehoe to waimea. I BBQ'd the meat on Oahu at a cousins house and it was delicious.

Tough critters!

Hey gang,

One of the tougher hunts I've done. With just getting over illness and a twisted ankle to boot, I had a blast. I have a deep appreciation on how tough these little Javelina are.

Tough to see, tough to hunt, tough to kill. Each one taken involved hours of glassing, navigation thru brutal terrain and required multiple shots. Not one "went quietly into that good night".

It was a joy to see XDHUNTER make some long range shots and I was in awe of the "studliness" of PICKENSCJ, the man is a cross between a bulldozer and the energizer bunny.

GLASSEYE pulled off some amazing navigation feats and was a wealth of knowledge about the terrain and Javelina habits. I learned alot from him, including the in's and outs of how illegal immigratition works. We even spotted a few of those out there.

Here are some more shots:

Shot my javie before dark on the second day of our hunt, after watching him for hours on top of poachers peak. he was with a group of three havelina roating the hillside below us.
I learn a lot from this hunt, what to look for, what they eat, drink, how they use the habitat, both animal and human.:)and most of all what not to use as a gun rest when shooting.:smiley_doh:
Overall it was a tough and enjoyable hunt.definitely i will be back hunting with a bunch of good guys.
Next time AMIGOS!!!
