400-lb Wild Pigs Roam SJ Condo Complex

Oct 3, 2002

Sean Comey,www.kcbs.com

A herd of wild pigs has invaded a condo complex in South San Jose.

Experts say the huge animals are looking for food, but residents say they're
making a mess.

People at the California Maison complex say they've seen herds of dozen of
pigs, some of them weighing up to 400 lbs. each. Biologists say the animals
have a hard time finding food and water this time of year, so they come to urban
areas looking for something to eat and drink. But residents say they're afraid to
leave their homes when the pigs are roaming around outside.

"They look aggressive," said Estela Tarano, who's seen the pigs around the
complex. "You want to be careful."

"When pigs and humans come in contact, often the pigs will move off," said
Professor Michael Kutilek of San Jose State University. "But sometimes pigs
will be aggressive. Males can be especially aggressive and females with young
can be aggressive -- especially if someone gets between a female and her
young. She can attack. They're unpredictable... They can be dangerous."
The pigs have dug up lawns, searching for roots and insects to eat. The
managers of the condo complex have hired private contractors to trap the
animals. However, some residents don't like that solution, because the trapped
pigs will be euthanized.

They just had them hawgs on the news. Some big porkers doing some serious roto-tilling on some yards.

Don't make us SoCals mount up and head up there with our bows.

You shouldn't be so mean to those SJSU girls. They can't help it.

One of the young ladies I work with lives over there, and was complaining about it to me. She knows I hunt, and wanted me to come on over. Unfortunately, it's quite the urban area. Definitely no firearms hunting, and I doubt you could legally use a bow. Even if you could, the county municipal district owns the undeveloped land where the critters are living, and they are mostly coming in at night to do their damage.

At least one trapper is already on site, though, and they'll soon have these critters run out of town.

Sure wish they would let some of us Bay Area hunters take a stab at them.

OK.... How about we start a 'Volunteer' program to trap and 'relocate' these animals. I, for one, would volunteer. Tree huggers will be happy too, since we will not be 'euthenizing' them (of course, they don't have to know that I will be reloacating a couple of them to my backyard....).

Sorry boys, but the relocation is illegal here in California.

But it would be nice to dream about, wouldn't it???
