400-lb Wild Pigs Roam SJ Condo Complex

A herd of wild pigs has invaded a condo complex in South San Jose.
Experts say the huge animals are looking for food, but residents say they're
making a mess.
People at the California Maison complex say they've seen herds of dozen of
pigs, some of them weighing up to 400 lbs. each. Biologists say the animals
have a hard time finding food and water this time of year, so they come to urban
areas looking for something to eat and drink. But residents say they're afraid to
leave their homes when the pigs are roaming around outside.
"They look aggressive," said Estela Tarano, who's seen the pigs around the
complex. "You want to be careful."
"When pigs and humans come in contact, often the pigs will move off," said
Professor Michael Kutilek of San Jose State University. "But sometimes pigs
will be aggressive. Males can be especially aggressive and females with young
can be aggressive -- especially if someone gets between a female and her
young. She can attack. They're unpredictable... They can be dangerous."
The pigs have dug up lawns, searching for roots and insects to eat. The
managers of the condo complex have hired private contractors to trap the
animals. However, some residents don't like that solution, because the trapped
pigs will be euthanized.
