Anyone taken a pig with a 45-70? I have a Guide Gun I am thinking about using. Just curious how the bullets performed if you don't mind sharing what you were shooting... Got some Cor-bon stuff left until my reloading gear arrives.

My brother in laws 450 was devastating. 45-70 is plenty. Try for only rib or neck damage, as other shots will ruin a lot of meat.

I shoot a Guide Gun...but use the Remington 405gr soft point. Its a very mild load that is safe for old trapdoor rifles. It kicks like a 12ga dove load but is a good tranquilizer on hogs. It seems to just plow right through with minimal meat loss..as compared to some of the higher velocity centerfires...I think because its going so slow is the reason ..less bloodshot meat.I picked up some of the Winchester 300gr loads on sale and accuracy wise they seem quite promising..but have yet to use them on game.

Good luck with whatever you pick.

I have a Guide Gun and shoot 300 gr HP reloads that are balistically equal to the .450. Have only killed one pig with it, shoulder shot at about 80 yards. Dropped like a back of potatos, I think the term I'm looking for is THUMPED! As to meat damage, had a little more sausage out of that pig than I would've wanted.

Maybe I should re-think using my 30/30...but I shot a hog last week and got a good clean kill. She ran back into the palmetto scrub no more than 15 yards. (15 yards of palmetto scrub is like a mile trying to drag a big hog!) I could have used my 30.06 but opted for the iron sights on my Winchester 94.
