Hey all,
Well I managed to get my buddy his first elk on his first ever out of state hunt of any kind. It was the only animal we saw so LUCKY us! I was walking up a trail about 1:00pm. Since I was deadheading back I knew I was coming up on a large meadow below the trail that stretched to the opposite ridge. So just before I rounded the corner I told my daughter to hold back and I was going to slip up and take a look. As I crept up the more of the meadow I could see and low and behold out in the middle of the meadow was a lone bull. I tucked back and told my daughter to walk back down the trail to get my buddy and have him approach SLOW. I turned my attention back to the bull and tried to get into a position to shoot it. Well I tried to lay on the trail using my pack to rest but the brush below the trail was just a little too tall to see him. So I crawled back and try to reposition. While I was trying to figure it out my daughter and buddy came up. I got all excited and asked him if he was ready to kill his first bull! I took him up to the edge and got him set up to pop him. And he succeeded! Shots fired at 1:30 got to animal at 2:00, by the time we got him quartered and the 3ish miles back to camp. It was about 10:30 at night. It was a long day but priceless! 53.jpg 49.jpg 36.jpg 34.jpg

Very nice. I would think from all the reports I've read lately, the Lolo would be a tough hunt. I killed my first elk in Idaho. Fun times and hard work.

Yes it was hard hunting. That was the only elk we say until the drive out. We saw 5 or so cows in another unit before we got back into town . All in all still a very fun time.

Thanks all

Wow. That's great. I love to see the stories about people helping out new hunters. I am still very green and have learned lots from people here and other research. One thing I learned is this is one of the hardest hobby to get into. I thought the fishing guys are closed lipped, but hunters are the leaders of secret keeping. Congrat to all of you. I hope to do the same with my family someday. Great stuff. BBQ time for sure.

ps. Way cool you use horses. I been riding since I was 5.

My buddy and I grew up hunting blacktail bucks, quail, ducks, geese, and fishing all In our home town. Since I've gotten older I've expanded to multiple species and multiple States. He never left hunting and fishing the home town. After years of trying i resorted to cheating...... I had his wife buy is tag so he had no choice. Lol. I think I have him hooked!

Adding horses to any hunt adds a whole new dynamic. The horse I took on this hunt was a trooper and he just wants to please. So he is like, you want to throw that dead animal on my back?? Well, ok let's do it. It took me about ten minutes to get the bags loaded and on him and the head strapped on and he just stood there eating in the meadow. I don't think I'll ever do another DYI hunt without him. He's that good. Those kind of horses don't just fall out of the clear blue sky.
