Hey all,
Well I managed to get my buddy his first elk on his first ever out of state hunt of any kind. It was the only animal we saw so LUCKY us! I was walking up a trail about 1:00pm. Since I was deadheading back I knew I was coming up on a large meadow below the trail that stretched to the opposite ridge. So just before I rounded the corner I told my daughter to hold back and I was going to slip up and take a look. As I crept up the more of the meadow I could see and low and behold out in the middle of the meadow was a lone bull. I tucked back and told my daughter to walk back down the trail to get my buddy and have him approach SLOW. I turned my attention back to the bull and tried to get into a position to shoot it. Well I tried to lay on the trail using my pack to rest but the brush below the trail was just a little too tall to see him. So I crawled back and try to reposition. While I was trying to figure it out my daughter and buddy came up. I got all excited and asked him if he was ready to kill his first bull! I took him up to the edge and got him set up to pop him. And he succeeded! Shots fired at 1:30 got to animal at 2:00, by the time we got him quartered and the 3ish miles back to camp. It was about 10:30 at night. It was a long day but priceless!
