60,000 S. Dakotans applied for hunting licenses

60,000 applied online for state hunting licenses

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — This was the first year that hunters could apply for big-game hunting licenses online in South Dakota, and state Game, Fish & Parks officials call the program a success.

Hunters filed about 60,000 applications online — more than a third of all applications for such game as elk, deer and antelope.

Online applications are cheaper to process than paper applications and are more practical for hunters, the department said.

"They can see that the information is correct right there," Al Jockheck, GF&P license supervisor, said.

But some online applicants still had to wait for a paper notice telling them how to claim their tag. And the confirmation and check had to be sent in on paper and through the post office.
