Trigg County deer hunter reaches goal
By JOE WILSON, Hopkinsville) Kentucky New Era. jwilson@kentuckynewera.com
CADIZ, Ky. -- Most people are pleased to get one deer during the hunting season.
It doesn't matter to them which weapon they use, whether it is a bow, pistol, shotgun, rifle, crossbow or a muzzleloader. They only care that they come home with a trophy deer.
But for Trigg County hunter Riley Stacey, he wanted to try something that had never been done before. He wanted to kill a deer with each kind of weapon during the individual season.
Two days before the end of the final season, his arrow from his bow found its mark. And Stacey had achieved his goal.
"I was down to only two days left and it was a tough one," Stacey said. "For about three months I got up at 4 a.m. and went to a tree stand. But it was really enjoyable."
Stacey didn't want too much venison, so most of his deer were yearlings in the 190-pound range.
An avid hunter and fisherman, the 73-year-old Stacey retired to Cadiz after working as an electrical engineer. He was born in Hazard, but spent most of his adult life hunting in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
"I enjoy bow hunting most of all," he said. "I didn't tell many people about this because I did it for my own enjoyment. As far as I know, it's never been done before."
Stacey had a plan from the beginning. He picked out the weapons he was going to use in August and began picking off the deer one-by-one.
"I really got lucky," he said modestly. "The most fun about being out there every morning and evening in pursuit of deer has nothing to do with killing anything. It's the beauty of being out there."
Stacey has plans to top his latest achievement when he hunts next season.
"I have killed a lot of nice bucks with a bow, but I never had a head mounted. Next year I'm going to kill a really nice buck with a bow and have the head mounted."
The odds are probably with him on that.
