Give kids a plate of barbecue, and they eat for a day. Teach them how to fish, and maybe they eat for a lifetime.
On Saturday, the Gridley Recreation Department will offer kids a chance to fish and have lunch in a nice outdoor setting – for free.
"It'll be a nice and mellow day," says Malanee Montero, the recreation manager. "Where else can you take a kid, spend time with the family, get a goodie bag, a free meal, all for free?"
The Kids Fishing Derby at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area is open to kids up to 15 years old. (Parents and older family members are welcome, too. But they'll have to pay for food.) Located about an hour north of Sacramento, the derby will feature expert anglers who will teach children the basics of fishing, from baiting a hook to casting.
The California Department of Fish and Game refuge has plenty of open land to roam, including a pond that will be stocked with more than 800 pounds of catfish. A limited number of fishing rods are available, so it's best to bring your own. Bait will be available for free.
