Well, I'm back from another great weekend at Choppers. Met up with the guys (Orso, Speckmisser, and RichW) late moring Friday. Just hung around Friday evening and went to visit Jack. Had some good Tuna and Calimary, thanks to Rich W for that. Orso was good enough to cook us up some good grub (marinated chicken and Carne Asada) saturday evening. As always awesome grub and company around the fireplace in the evenings. Anywasy, to the hunting. Philip was deep into hogs every day in Round Springs, he was chasing them with his Trad bow, so I'm sure he'll chime in on his hunts. I hunted the same area that Jay hunted when he got his monster. Saturday morning, about 100 yards into my hunt, I see a large red boar rooting straight ahead of me. Wind at my back (no time to really get a sense of it until then), small sapling pine in between us with low branches. I am about 20 yards out and start to try and get a clear shot. I get to within 10 yards and about to veer off to side to get a lane, then ithappens, he snorts and takes off. Stops at about 50 yards and looks back. I just kind of waved at him as he ran away in the timber line snorting away. I finish my walk down the draw and notice all the rooting and heavily used trails. I decide I would come back that evening.
I come back that evening and the wind is perfect this time. I get about half way down my intended stalk, when the wind swirls and changes direction on me, the thermals have given in to the coolness of the approaching evening. I get to the heavily used trails and move past them about 20 yards so I can be downwind. About 5 minutes later, I hear the familiar crunching of something moving down the trail. I see the pig approching the trails that would have him cross the road. H is headed directly toeards me and stops. Decides to hit the trail to his left which puts him behind some brush. I draw and wait for him to emerge. I see his nose poke through and he hesitates, I release as he I him lunge forward, then jumps down to the road, this little jumping maneuver causes my shot ti hit further bakc than planned, but it still looks good. I see a real nice red spot just forward of his hip. I takes off and runs, I hear him runnign parallel to me through the trees then nothing. I go look at the spot and follow his trail for about 30 yards, very good bloodtrail, both sides (Chopper finds the arrow the next morning hung up in patch of poison oak). It was gettign dark adn I decide to come back the next morning. On my way out, i run into soem more hogs and let them run off, they were consderably smaller than the hog I shot. Next morning Mike and I meet up with Chopper. He brought his dogs, but we decided we would look for pig first before lettinf them out. Miek and I set out (thanks again for helping bud), and after about a 100 yard zig zag path, we find my hog. He was alot bigger than I thought he was , and I was pleasantly surprised with the teeth he was showing off when Iwalked up on him. Not as big as my last big boar, but big enough, he measured 3" on right side and 3 1/4" on left side. Here's a pic form CHop's phone camera, Mike took some more back at the shed. I'm sure he'll post those up soon. Anyways, another great time at Wild Hog Adventures...please make it out there when you get a chance...
I'm looking to do a Euro mount, I know a few JHOers do that, please email me. Or, if you know of someone that does those, please forward me their info.
Thanks.
