Yah, I was out there this morning, too. Saw 2 forkies and 4 does. Very hot and dry. Surprised that I didn't see any pig sign---no rutting, poop, or tree rubs. There was water in the usual ponds, though. The only good thing about today's hunt was that the temperature wasn't as hot as it usually is. Probably be checking out FHL next week.

On the backside of the property on the hill across from the pond that's near the property line. There's a huge chapparrel patch that the fireroad parallels. The deer cut across the patch and went over the hill towards the Romero Ranch. If I get drawn for the gun opener I'll probably set up on one of the hills near the patch and wait for somebody to push something pass me. Will probably bowhunt only San Louis WMA (weekday) and FHL on the weekends till gun opener. The knees ain't what they used to be. Sounds like you guys had a real adventure getting back to the truck!! Glad you made it back in one piece.

A few of my buddies were at Cottonwood. Saw only does. Said they talked to a warden, and he said there were 100+ hunters for last years opening weekend, this year, way less than half that. Also, (just my own observation)last year, they ran no cattle, and there were a lot of deer and hogs. They ran cattle this year, and it seems to have pushed a lot of the game out.

Hunted the Mendocino National Forest pretty hard this weekend and never had the chance to draw back my bow. Saw 10 deer. All does and fawns with 1 spike. Good luck with the rest of the season.

I'm down one arrow, and no meat on the hook, but it was cool! First time to launch an arrow at a deer; a nice 3 x 3 at 60 yards, but boy did he jump the string! The arrow passed two feet behind his ass and disappeared over the hill. Oh, well.

That's why it's called "hunting" and not "killing". Sounds like you have the right attitude and had a good time - made a good memory regardless.

Better luck next time.

I biked in 5 miles and it turns out that I was hunting within 200 yards of three other guys. What are the chances of that? No deer spotted on the opener (although they were there the day before).

On Day 3, I was a little late getting to my spot, riding my bike down the trail. I almost ran over a buck, doe, and two yearlings on the trail. I don't know if they were more shocked, or if I was. I unloaded my bow and started after them. In that time, the buck didn't like the coming scenario and disappeared. I was able to catch up to the doe and yearlings, but no buck.

Eventually, I made it to my original destination (very late morning and very hot). This was the spot I had scouted and found the other hunters on the opener. Standing where I believed the buck would show up, I noticed the brush was torn apart. A freshly destroyed manzanita bush with busted limbs and leaves all over...Did my buck scrape off his velvet? Did he do it that morning? Would I have made the shot? Who knows?

This was my first archery hunt. No meat in the freezer, but I am hooked. Thirty years (that sounds like a long time) of rifle hunting, and now all I can think of is taking my bow out again. What took me so long to try archery? Four days of hunting and the only hunters I saw were the three on opening morning. What an awesome weekend. Too bad it is so damned hot.
