AB 342

The hearing of AB 342 was held today. Unfortunately, the 4-10 vote resulted in the bill being pushed back for reconsideration; the roll call lacked the necessary 11 Nay votes to be killed.

It may be heard as early as 22-Apr-03 or as late as May.

We need to turn up the heat and generate as great an outpouring of opposition as we did before and during today's meeting.

I saw on a couple of other boards yesterday 500 hunters showed up and the bill was shot down... What's correct ???

Technically and officially, the bill is not yet dead. The tally was 4 Yea, 10 Nay and six absent from roll call. Bills require 11 Nay votes to be killed outright and AB342 got only 10. It has been pushed back for "reconsideration"---another vote.

Where the speculation and the calling for victory lies is that the author would need to get all six of the absentees from yesterday's hearing, plus one of the Nay voters to all vote Yea at the next meeting. This does not seem probable, therefore, some organizations are already calling it a victory.

Call me a pessimist, but I don't count my chicks...before the fat lady sings. I won't rest nor make a sigh of relief until I see the 11 Nay votes.

I personally want this upcoming vote to set enough of a precedent (as many Nays as possible) so that it will force the HSUS to reevaluate their strategy and back off of this issue for awhile. The greater the Nay votes, the longer they are likely to not attempt to push this legislation through. That is why I will be doing my damndest to pressure the six absentees to vote Nay in the next go-round.

Would indeed be nice to get as many of those as possible to vote "nay"
