Access Yes Growing Thanks to Hunters and Anglers; Check Yes Applying this May

CASPER – A couple extra checks in your 2003 deer, elk, and pronghorn application are guaranteed to improve your odds…of finding a place to hunt.

The first check marks the box that says you agree to donate to AccessYes. The second check is your actual donation. Revenue from this voluntary fund is used solely by the Private Lands Public Wildlife Access Program to secure public access through its walk-in hunting and fishing areas and hunter management areas.

May is the month for residents to apply for limited quota elk, deer and antelope licenses and make an Access Yes check-off when they do.

The amount of access the fund provides is determined solely by the amount of contributions. Both the walk-in and hunter management areas are free. Donations can also be made when purchasing over-the-counter licenses from agents across the state.

“Your contribution shows you are committed to the importance of public access in Wyoming,” said Brian Olsen, regional access coordinator for northeastern Wyoming. “Donating money gives us more opportunity to find you quality areas to hunt and fish.”

Examples of how your money will be spent include boosting walk-in acreage, securing access through private lands to reach public lands and acquiring additional fishing easements.

AccessYes donations totaled $161,083 in 2002 fiscal year. This is one quarter more than the previous year, and it helped G&F sign up 980,000 acres for hunting, as well as 82 stream miles and 110 lake acres for fishing. Over a million acres are already enrolled for the 2003 hunting season.

The AccessYes fund was created in 1998 following a series of public meetings in which hunters and anglers suggested the G&F offer a voluntary license check-off to purchase access.
