My wife and have decided to go Colorado instead of Oregon. I rifle hunted Unit 33 a couple years ago, but that unit appears to be private land only for Archery. I am looking at Meeker (11, 211, 22), Grand Junction (30, 31, 41) and Montrose (62, 64, 65) areas. From what I saw on the Colorado Game and Parks website it appears 11, 31, 40, and 64 have the best archery success % of the above mentioned zones, all around 20%. However, from what I have heard 11 has a lot of private land by the oil and mine companies. My wife and I are looking for any legal bull, then a cow second to have meat in the freezer. Any advice on places to look without giving up anyone's honey- hole, would be much appreciated. We would be staying in lodging in one of the towns mentioned and would be driving back and forth from the zone we're hunting, unless someone new of a cabin for rent in one of those zones. We've been archery hunting for a few years for deer, but this is our first archery elk hunt. We're both in a very good shape and not afraid to hike.
Thank you for any advice you can provide.
