AFTON GAME WARDEN DUANE HYDE RETIRES AFTER 45 YEARS OF G&F SERVICE

WGFD, Contact: Jeff Obrecht

For Immediate Release

12/20/02

AFTON – The patriarch of Wyoming game wardens has retired. Duane Hyde of Afton is entering private life after 45 years of public service with the Game and Fish Department.

“Duane’s work ethic, dedication to the job and wildlife resource was second to none during his long career,” said Bernie Holz, regional wildlife supervisor in Jackson and Pinedale.

Hyde is a Star Valley native. He attended Utah State University before beginning his G&F career as a laborer in Auburn. He was a construction foreman at Sybille before starting his enforcement career in Dubois. He also served as a game warden in Newcastle, Pinedale and Douglas before transferring to Afton in 1971.

“After 45 years with the department and 42 as a game warden, you’d think a guy might have lost some of his job enthusiasm over the years,” Holz said. “But that definitely wasn’t the case with Duane, as he continued to have a tremendous drive for the job.”

Hyde was named the Wyoming Game Warden’s Association’s 2001 “Officer of the Year.” He has also spearheaded mountain lion training for Jackson region employees.

He and his wife, Shirley, will continue to reside in Star Valley. He plans to actively hunt upland game birds across the West.

Hyde’s district is now being patrolled by Todd Graham, who transferred from Wheatland.
