EDMONTON -- A 300-lb. grizzly that took a bullet while mauling a hunter was found dead in the bush yesterday, said Sustainable Resource Development spokesman David Ealey.
The 49-year-old hunter is at Edmonton's University Hospital recovering from serious injuries to his head, shoulder and torso sustained in the bear attack, which occurred on Saturday.
Ealey said the man was hunting elk in a wooded area about 45 km southwest of Rocky Mountain House, which is about 250 km northwest of Calgary.
"The bear did attack him a couple of times, and in the process he was able to re-acquire his rifle and shoot it, and it was killed," Ealey said.
After making it back to his ATV, the injured man managed to drive back to his wife, who took him to the hospital in Rocky Mountain House.
He was then airlifted to Edmonton.
The bear's carcass was found by wildlife officers, who have brought it back to Edmonton for an examination in hopes of finding a clue to why it attacked a human, Ealey said.
