First of all, if you don't know, speckmisser and me have a bet on the first hog shot this year with a bow........well we have a wet sow that’s been hanging around our place so for fun last Sunday evening I grabbed my camera and went down to the creek........sure enough there she is...I take several pics chuckling the whole time.....in the morning I planned on coming up with some story to raz spec with.......well I won this camera and still don't know how to use it…when I got home and all the pics were blank.........and now the rest of the story:
I'm sitting home yesterday and after reading the manual that came with the camera I think I have it figured out and head back to the creek to see if I can get a pic of that sow......sure enough there she is......I snap off a quick pic and she turns away from me......to my surprise she turns out to be he......a nice boar I figure would go between 125 - 150 pounds....and he's moseying down the creek like he doesn't have a care in the world...good enough.....I run back to the house and grab my bow..(in my haste I forget the range finder)...made it back to where I figure I'd intercept him......I look and he's a couple hundred yards up the creek and moving my way.....I stepped behind a bush and waited a minute...right about now the wind changes and is blowing straight towards the hog........I peek around the bush and...he's gone...busted......*SIGH*....well now I have a difficult decision to make.....do I go back to the house and do honey do's or stay here and enjoy the evening........having about an hour left of daylight I decided not to go home........after about 10 minutes of sitting the tulles erupted with black birds making all kinds of racket....I stand up and look and sure enough here he comes out of the tulles working his way towards me.......he get's to what I thought was 30 yards from me and turns broadside in an opening in some tulles........I draw and release….the hog jumps forward turns and looks back to where my arrow hit……thinking I jerked I shoot a second time…….another miss……dang…….the hog’s had enough and starts coming towards me….step’s out of the tulles and is now less than 20 yards broadside in the open……all I can think now is BIG PIG!!!! Not the 150 pounder I thought it was……my hearts now in my throat and my hands are shaking from the adrenalin rush…this hog still doesn’t know I’m there…I draw again and put my 20 yard pin low on his chest….(mind you I have 20,30,40 and 50 yard pins and practiced on all)…..this is no lie….at the exact moment I release a voice yell’s in my head…..YOU IDIOT!!!!!.......some how for just a brief moment I went dyslectic…….I had my 50 yard pin on the hog…..back in the tulles he goes……..I retrieve my last arrow and head across the pasture to head him off……I walked down to the creek and here him in the tulles……by now shooting light is dwindling…..so rather than trying for another shot and having to track a wounded hog in the dark I back out…..I headed back to where I took my first shots and look…..still looks like 30 yards….I go to retrieve my arrows and look back and now it looks more like 40 – 50 yards (I’m going to range it today and see)….lessons learned: range finder – never leave home without it……and if I’m going to be shooting 20 yards with my 50 yard pin – turn my bow around….LOL…….anyways, last Saturday morning on my way to work I see a lone cow in my pasture….thinking it odd I take a better look and see it’s not a cow but a huge black hog……I’m thinking this is him and if so I may yet get another chance…..here’s the pic I took……forgive the bad quality…I’m still trying to figure out this dang camera.

Dang,

Time for me to make a little road trip down toward Coalinga. Might have to pull off at a certain turnout above a certain creek bed to, you know, take a leak or something...

Bet ol' Spec had some serious mojo hex put on you Sunday. These bets can be pretty serious.

BD-You have worst excuse than mine and XDhunter (not bagging that legal buck in FHL).

But kudos, you made yours very elaborate. I'm sure Speck is shaking in his boots for the prospect of losing a bet.

Looks to me the odds of you getting a pig first are stacked in your favor. Let's see, Spec has to drive unbelievable distances to get a place to hunt and you just run back to the house and get your gear? Spec, I'd watch what I put on the table for that bet.

Although I expect if I asked real nice (and had some time to get away), BD would let me come down behind his house and try my luck.

Heck, I gotta come down during quail season so I can get some video of you and that boomerang Remington you shoot. Nobody believes me when I tell them how that thing shoots around corners at 20 yards.
