Well I am headed to RSA in July. I am wondering what the best way to pack my handloads for the .375 would be. I have a couple of empty Federal Premuim boxes, and that is the best I have come up with. What has others used to transport ammo before?

I made two boxes of handloads for my dad’s safari trip last year and I put them in Remington factory boxes. The boxes looked new and he had no problems.

Thanks bpn. Did you crimp them or just go with the insertion of the bullet with no crimp?

They were 270 Win 150grn Nosler Partition bullets (not crimped). They were sticking out longer than a factory bullet would and I remember they barely fit in the boxes. He didn’t have a problem bringing them over but he left them there when he went home. I didn’t appreciate that because he used his bow most of the time and only fired 5 rounds. Oh well.

Good luck. If your boxes look new you shouldn’t have a problem.

Bigs,
I took my handloads for two different guns over in factory boxes too. They were mixed brand boxes, but same caliber for the guns I had with me.No problems, they just opened them to make sure they were the caliber listed on the box and paperwork. There were guys behind me that had reloader 50 boxes with 30-06 taped on the top and they went through too,no problems. You just cant have more than 200 hundred rounds per caliber,I think...it was....

Thanks Duknutz. I think the 200 rounds is correct, but for flying, the requirement is to not exceed 11 pounds of ammunition. That .375 H&H round doesn't take long to make up that 11 pounds...LOL

But that makes me feel better. I will use the empty factory boxes with the ammo I am taking. Did either of you pack those in another container, or just have them in the main checked baggage?

I had them in my checked bag taped together, with the ends taped up so they wouldn't open.Be sure and use a good gun case,I spent the money and bought a Cabela's wheeled safari case and I'm glad I did.You should see the dent's that were put in this case(by the airlines)by the time I got back. Also, you might want to take a light weight soft case for transportation while moving from concession to concession.Alot of these guys just put your guns in the vehicle(between the seats) or in the gunrack in the back of the truck. Most of the gunracks are made out of tire rubber and will mar your wood finished guns if not carefull. And be sure to take some 100% DEET for ticks,I don't care what the outfitter says. You don't want to end up feeling sick for a month after you get home from tick bites......

Thanks Duk. I think I am going to buy the SKB quad rifle case. I looked at teh aluminum but decided to go with the SKB. Did you have to pay an extra charge for the weight and size of the case? and would that case hold my Mathews bow? If so I may have a looksey at it. i will have to pay for an oversize case anyway, so a little more for weight won't make that much difference.

Bigs,
I think they make a bow case or even a combo. No, they didn't charge me an extra fee.I loaded that thing right up to the max weight(70 lbs)put my binos and whatever else in it.I also took my bolts out and wrapped them up in old socks and put them down under the barrel.
