Seminary shut after porn scandal
By CNN's Chris Burns
Thursday, August 12, 2004 Posted: 11:37 AM EDT (1537 GMT)

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A Vatican investigator has ordered the immediate shutdown of an Austrian seminary embroiled in a child pornography scandal, saying he found evidence of homosexual relations there.

"It was painful for me to discover, that active homophile relations had developed," Bishop Klaus Kueng said in a statement Thursday after his investigation of the St. Poelten seminary, where about 40,000 photos and numerous videos had been discovered.

"There was unfortunately a grave, undesirable trend: this was at the latest made clear through pornographic pictures that some seminary students actively downloaded from the Internet," he said in the statement released on the St. Poelten diocese Web site.

Photos also surfaced of seminary students kissing and fondling each other. Some photos were published in Austrian newspapers, and the controversy prompted Pope John Paul II to send Kueng as an "apostolic visitor" to investigate.

The bishop called for a "new beginning" for the seminary. As for the existing seminary students, they will have access to medical or spiritual help, have the opportunity to apply to other seminaries, or seek another profession, he said.

One seminary student is to go before the St. Poelten State Court on Friday to face charges of downloading child pornography, said Bernhard Herzberger, spokesman for the St. Poelten diocese.

Of the 36 seminarians, two have quit since the scandal broke in recent weeks, Herzberger told CNN in a telephone interview from St. Poelten, 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Vienna.

Bishop Krenn, however, has refused to resign and has turned down interviews, Herzberger said.

The scandal is only the latest to hit the Catholic Church, which has been sued for millions of dollars in Europe and America in recent years over priests sexually abusing minors.

I'm catholic...but my mom stopped practicing when she was a late teen. My dad's Presbyterian from his dad's side, but his mother was Catholic.

My sister just got back into it and received her confirmation. I think she only did it to appease my brother-in-law, who wants to start taking the kids to church more.

The Catholics have a lot of serious issues to face and they seem to be in a serious state of denial. I have a feeling that it will have to get a lot worse before it gets better. Or, it may just fall apart altogether. Who knows!!

colusa... I am going to have to agree with you on that.. Let me ask another question?? My wife and I have been debating about letting the kids go to public or private school.. It really depends on what area we wind up moving to. I know that your girl is in public school in a pretty good school district. The problem is that we have lots of GREAT private schools around Dallas, but they are ALL CATHOLIC (with the exeption of one).. I refuse to let my kids go to one of these schools for a couple of reasons: 1)We are not Catholic and I do not want them shoving the Catholic faith down my kids throat, like I have heard that most of them do 2)I dont want them to be caught up in any of the mess that has been going on in that church.. I think that you know I would blow a gasket if any priest tried to pull any of this crap on my own kid.. Am I wrong for feeling this way???

Hey CD, funny you should mention it. My sister went to Catholic School, but I went to public. My folks gave us a choice. My sister went back to the public route in her 2nd year of high school. The reason is that the ratio of teaching sisters to Lay teachers really slid more towards the lay teachers. I don't mean to offend anyone, but the quality of the lay teachers in my sister's Catholic High School really sucked...and it was a pretty good Catholic Girl's High School in Sierra Madre at one time.

The Catholic schools used to be really high quality when the sisters did most of the teaching, but the lay teachers are often not credentialed and are poorly compensated...and we all know that you usually get what you pay for!

You can probably find non-denominational private schools that are good.

My daughter went to Carden Academy for her first two years of school. They have a great program. They teach religious values but not religion, and they also teach American values, and really stress the fundamentals of a classic education. You should see if they have one in your area. They are all over the country. The only bummer is that they have a lot of rules. That's not always a bad thing, but sometimes it just gets ridiculous.

Check out the Carden website.

Hope all is well With the wife, son and new daughter!!

See ya!

Then don't send them to a Catholic school. God forbid you give someone money to shove Catholicism down your child's throat.

Like the Catholic church is the only religious organization having problems nowadays.

Coondog it sounds like you have some prejudices against the Catholic CHurch. My suggestion would be to look elsewhere for your child's education. I'm sure there are plenty of other private schools out there who would gladly take your money.

How active are you in your child's education? That is probably more important than where you send your child to school.

Karstic.. If you read my original post, all the private schools here are Catholic(at least the ones with the good rankings).. That being said, if we were to choose a good private school, we do not have much of a choice...

Nothing against the Catholic church other than seeing some twisted priest on the news every other night for getting his jollies off with some elementary school kid... I can honestly say that in the last year I have not heard one bit of news about any other faith having these kinds of problems. Its not like I am making this stuff up..

I am as active in my kids education as I can be right now.. He is only 2yrs. old and I have a newborn. We are already trying to decide what to do when the time comes..

As a devout Catholic it deeply saddens me to hear news of yet another scandal. I dont know what to say. I have been in contact with countless numbers of priests and Catholic religious leaders since day one and I have NEVER seen, heard, or experienced anything even remotely scandalous. I am proud of my faith and will defend it indefinitely. I, of course, will not make any excuse for this sort of behavior. God has a way of settling things and he will keep ultimate score. The Catholic church is a massive organization, and just by pure odds, there are bound to be some troubles. I'm sure there are plenty of other religions that are having similar problems. They just have not been brought to the forefront as no one has blown the whistle yet. And with the anti-Christian media in this country they will make only an evil few seem like the dominant majority. Its really sad that people have let the media convince us that a few scandals mean that the entire Church is corrupt. This is simply not the case. The VAST majority of Catholic Christians, both clergy and lay, are wonderful God-fearing people who have only the best interests in mind. I know this to be true.

Back to the issue at hand. Take a sample of schools nationwide, 1/2 public and 1/2 Catholic. Which do you think will have more problems? With the drugs, sex, theft, and violence that occurs in many of the nation's public schools, Catholic schools pale in comparison. It is a decision only a loving parent can make after thorough research.

Being Catholic myself it also bothers me when I hear about another church scandel.
But that does sway my faith. As mentioned previously every religion has its fair share of problems. COONDOG, as far as you hearing about Catholics shoving there religion down peoples throats, well I for one have never done that to anyone, and I believe that it is no worse then any other religion when trying to convert someone to seeing their side of how things should be. I have total respect for all denominations wether I agree with them or not. "To each his own" With that being said, I really try to live by that old adage which we know all to well......... Two things you never argue about, Politics and Religion, and IMHO, Religion being the very touchy one because a friendly arguement can get ugly really fast.........................

UPER.. I was really referring to the actual Catholic schools. From what I have heard, they really push all the kids to participate in all of the catholic ceremonies, whether they are Catholic or not.. I am really speculating here, but I have heard this from more than one person. I was also told that if you did not want to participate in Mass or whatever, you did not have to, but you were really looked down upon for not doing so...

SDHNTR.. I am not saying that the entire chuch is corrupt, but I am saying that it bothers me and I do hear about it way too often.. I also hear about this happening in public schools sometimes, just not nearly as often.. As far as the other religions are concerned, I am sure it happens, but if it is not reported there is no way for the world to know what is going on. I do have to give them the benefit of the doubt though, because if improper activity was happening with a child, it would make the news regardless of their religion, background, etc... I would think that very few parents would just sit back and not report it...

Being pretty ignorant to the Catholic faith, would it not solve most of the problems to let the Priests marry so they can live normal lives like the rest of us?? Then maybe they would not be in the news so much!!!

COONDOG, letting Priests marry has been a hot debate for years now wether they should be able to or not. My
let them do it, I think it would benifit the Catholic church as a whole, since a lot of priests leave anyway because they cannot marry and raise a family.

COONDOG....I am a newbe here to this site but i must say that you sound like a real moron. If you don't want the Catholic faith put on your kids, why would you put them in Catholic school or even contemplate putting them in for that matter? It's a "Catholic" school you dummy....what do you think they are going to teach them....Hindu? And further more; I am getting a little sick and tired of everyone ranking on the Church. A few fags slip thru the cracks and all the suden the Catholic Church is evil....we are talking about an extreme minority here people...a fraction of a percent. The only reason you are hearing about it at all is because we live in a society that looks for things to bitch about, and think about it for a minute.....who controls the media in this country? What sect? I'll tell you if you don't already know.....The Jews...thats right. And when was the last time you heard about a rabi diddler? NEVER and you never will either. I am Catholic and have been my entire life....Some of the kindest and most generous people I have ever met are Priests. I have never heard of any of this crap first hand....EVER. Your only getting one side of the story....the Jew side when you watch the news or read the paper. Get with the program........................................................

HEY!!!!! THAHUNTA! think you need to throttle back a little and think about what you are saying! no need for name calling on any of these forums, and their is nothing wrong with someone else's opinion on matters. This is a good place to meet some really great people and talk about a wide range of things, so sit back and just scope it out for awhile and really look at what you are reading and saying before you go off half cocked. Just a little friendly advice...............

I 100% agree with UPER, chill out a little. This forum, and site as a whole, does not permit name calling and personal attacks. A friendly and even heated debate is fine (political forum is good for that) but not attacks. People will always disagree on topics, just don't make it personal

As for <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Your only getting one side of the story....[/b]
. In a child molestation case there aren't really that many sides to consider.

I was raised catholic but am no longer practicing. Just not for me, but I have no real gripe with the catholic church other than it needs to move with the times and it doesn't so it loses many good people.

Ok, the campfire is really blazin now....I was brought up Catholic, went to a private school, taught the catholic faith. Never had any problems ever or heard of any either 20 years ago.....But I agree that they should let the priest marry. Even though that probably wouldn't make a difference for the few freaks that molest children, your either straight or your not
But I think it would help if the priest were married and had there own children so they could communicate on the same level with the people that follow them.....How do you teach or counsel people about stuff that you know nothing about...I.E. marriage, children, family, etc.....just my
Blazin P.S. I dont really practice or follow the church to much either anymore due to a lot of the b.s. that has been going on..... But I do thank God everytime I am out In his beatiful country..........

Hey UPER....thanks for the advice bud....but i have sat back and scoped this place out for a while and thats why i decided to join....and your absolutely right...everyone is entitled to their opinion, and once they post it they need to deal with others opinions of their opinion. If you want to post something offensive, go right ahead...just get ready for the backlash. And then deal with it....................God hates a coward

You'd better watch yourself and mind your manners 'thehunta". We don't talk to people that way around here.
