Well I posted back Dec about a lucky public land hunt. Must be a lucky streak! Ended up deciding to go to Ligget at the last minute when they posted it was going to be open this weekend. Called up my buddy and said lets shoot down there for the day and do a little scouting for our hunt in March. Well as it turns out, we went to one our favorite areas and found the hogs in the brush patch/bowl and with just 2 of us we left them alone and went into our other favorite area. Well almost just like our last trip in Dec we roll up to the area and not there for more than 2 mins we spot 2 hogs on the edge of the brush patch. We look at each other and really can't believe it but we quickly discuss a plan and turn around and head over to the patch. We parked before it and headed over. This time we decided we would have one of us go into the patch and move the hogs around and one of us stay just outside of it. My buddy goes in and not 5 mins into it I hear a gun shot and here they come. About 6 are running to the left of me and kind of heading my way. Oh forgot to tell you that we were using muzzle loaders so really only have 1 shot. LOL! THinking to myself you better make this count. Anyway the hogs are running to my left and I am behind a tree about 40 yards or so waiting on the right shot. I notice one pig decides he is going sideways on the hill and is headed right for me. I wait and he runs right into my boot and looks up and sees me there and grunts and turns to my right and trys to run by me. Well that did not work and I point and let one rip. Boom! Down he goes. Perfect meat hog. Quickly I reload, well quickly..................................reload a MZ quickly! Not really. But I am reloaded and another shot goes off in the brush and I look up I see another 2 hogs coming out. They are just outside the patch not really knowing what to do. I see the smaller one run off in distance and decided not to pursue him and after the big black hog. About 200 lbs. I would guess. I see him walking just outside the patch and with the wind in my face I start a stock. I don't feel real comfortable with this MZ so I want to make it a bit more challenging and make sure I make a kill shot. The hog is standing there and not moving watching and listen to my buddy work his way though the brush. I move closer and closer..............................at this point I am about 25 yards away and feeling pretty good at this time. I raise up to shoot and bam he is gone. I see him trotting away at about 40 yards and I put a bead on him but don't feel good about taking the shot so I let him go for another day. Turns out, it would have not mattered anyway because I made a rookie MZ loader mistake, forgot to put a primer in! HaHa! So in the end, We were very lucky again and that big black hog was as well! All in all fun hunt! Turns out my buddy shot the pig that ran into my feet but was only wounded! He missed the others in the brush but we ended up with a nice meat hog! View attachment 80133

Congrats to you and your buddy, huntboar. Was there any water in the pond behind those trees in the background of the picture?

L2H-
No water in the pond. Completely dry! Matter a fact the whole base was pretty dry! Not much rain down there at all this past week from what I can tell.
Some of the old tracks have been washed out which was good and allowed us to find one of the herds.
Did you not end up going this weekend? Thought maybe you would have headed down there to get yourself another hog? Or still waiting for Dad to recover?
Thanks

That truck looks familiar - I think you drove by us in the evening..... we were the white 4Runner that would have been parked off the minor road to your right as you exited the area. If so, I was the guy with the bino's looking at you while you waved at me. :)

We heard a couple of shots earlier at about 4:30pm or so, way up above us - was that you? Nice pigs, and congratulations! We saw a lot of fresh tracks but couldn't find them. Found a lot of water, and lots of fresh muddy wallows - but no pigs. :(

Hi UB-
Not sure that was us. Don't recall seeing the white 4runner. Hopefully the next time we can run into each other and say "Hi".

Thanks to everyone else for the congrats! Hoping to get luck in March again!
