One of our local Air Force officers retired last year and while waiting for his wife to do the same has been hunting. He's never killed a hog and was beginning to think that we were pulling his leg about the pigs on Vandenberg. He'd go out with us one night; we wouldn't see a thing. We'd go the next night without him and pigs everywhere. Finally it all came together.

First though: Josh and I had spotted a dandy hog the week before and wanted to take Rod up there and see if we could put him on it. A week later.......

We started up the hill and when my truck topped out I stopped, 'cause there was something in the grass 300 yards out. Hogs. We parked, got set and eased down in there to see what was what. Turned out it was three sows and a bunch of rootbeer colored, watermelon-striped piglets. We got to about 30 yards before backing out. As we only had about 30 more minutes of light, we climbed back up the hill and continued on over to where we originally intended to go. I had just said we need to slow down and ease over the top when Rod spotted a BMO (that's Black, Moving Object) in the grass. Turned out it was the boar Josh and I had seen the week before, only now he's 125 yards away with his back to us and upwind. Perfect.

I got Rod set up and helped him calm down (he was really excited) and we sat and watched. Josh busted out his video camera and filmed the hunt. We determined for sure it was a boar, it had cutters as well, and all we needed was for him to turn broadside. That took about ten minutes and Rod smoked him with his 700 Remington and Federal Premium 180 gr. Barnes TSX. The hog slid downhill about ten feet and the fun was over.

Here's a couple of shots:

I usually don't see anything whenever I take out a new guy. I'm glad you broke the jinks for me, lol. Good work!

You and josh are killing machines! I need to come up again. Did Josh get my shot on vid by chance?

Nice hog, I'm guessing its the hog you saw on top awhile back?

This was up on Kumbar. I don't think Josh had his camera out with him that time. I'd like to see the footage of this last hunt.

We had seen either this one, or it was one that Josh's uncle missed a few nights earlier. We're thinking the latter 'cause the one we eyeballed a week earlier seemed huge. He walked by a cow and we were able to compare him against it and he seemed to be a toad. This one, while good, is no monster.

Oh he had it out and was recording...wether or not he got the shot, I don't know. If he did, I'd be willing to set up another round at the R&G club.

So the hogs are still moving, huh. Got memorial day coming up....

I just may... the office is driving me nuts. I'll let you know, maybe you can finish your honey hole tour before a hog shows up at the first spot.:lol bashing sign:

Yeah: you know it's tough when pigs ruin a perfectly good hog hunt. (Damn! I do NOT want to hike over there!)

:rotflmao: A man after my own heart!

But seriously, your little terrain tricks blew my mind and I'm dying to see what other forms of slight of hand you got!

When you said "let's get 'em" I thought you were crazy....until Josh said "without going over the cliff", the I was all in.

Can you still see those hogs up there? I thought the mustard would be 12' tall by now! I need to get up there and do a little scouting/pig hunting soon. I finally ended the turkey season!! Those birds are fun to hunt but drive me crazy at the same time.
