You'll want to double check tomorrow before you leave. Since there is a fire up there there has been talk that there may not be any area's open to hunt this weekend.

I have a friend that works on the base and he lets me know what it looks like the base is going to be doing for the weekend. The fire is on the base, from what i've been told, not south. Area's 4, 8, 12 possibly. I don't know exactly, only that the fire is on the base and that it may affect the hunting this weekend.

Again, just letting you know to double check based on what I heard. It doesn't mean the base will be closed, but if you go down with out checking first and find out it's closed then you'll have driven down there for nothing. Especially since you can't use that A-33 tag in the NF.

And projected training area availability is just an idea of what might be open. It doesn't mean those area's will be open; it's not set in stone. I'm just giving you a heads up is all.

Jeeper, Not sure about your friends info, but I just spoke with a good friend who is on the fire and he does not believe it has extended that far east. As for the projected open areas, I believe that was posted last week before the fire even began.

Area's open at FHL are only allowed for the J10, G8, and A33 tag holders.

Training Areas open for hunting on Saturday October 4th and Sunday October 5th, 2008 are: 19, 23, 25, 26, 28 for J10 tag holders; 23, 26, 28 for G8 tag holders, and 29 for A33 tag holders. The Chalk fire, a 10,000 acre fire located on the FHL west boundary, has created training area conflicts and availability for hunting this weekend.

Heard about the few training areas. My question would be for the 50 A-33 tag holders who must fit into 27 spots in area 29. How will this work as everyone will be there considering it's opening day?

There may not be 50 A-33 hunters there. Then again there might be. As for what they woudl do, don't know. They did some wierd things during the general season up there, making area's that had always been rifle area's archery only, etc. Who knows, maybe they'll open a couple more area's.

Huntr Pat,
How'd you do? What did you see? I'm sure the recent rains and cool weather helped things out a bunch. I'll be out there next week with my San Jose co-hunter trying to fill A-24 tags.

how does FHL work? I have read a bit about it, but I have never talked to anyone who hunts it. I have two hogs under my belt, but both were on private land. I would love to start going out on my own and not have to rely on someone taking me. Can any of you guys help me out with some advice?

FHL is a military training base divided into 30 zones. Range control will let the wildlife office know wed/thursday what area's will be open to hunting for the weekend, and then they'll announce it to the public thursday/friday. At that time you can check into an area at the game shack starting Friday from 3-6, or 3-7... not really sure when they close the window these days. You can only hunt on Sat/Sun however. The window will usually open around 5 or 6am on Sat/Sun to allow hunters to check into an area.

Once you're checked into an area you're only allowed to hunt that zone. If you want to go to a different area you have to go back to the game shack window and request to be changed. If there is space in the area then they'll allow the change. Think it's around 30 people on average that they allow into an area. Some less some a little more.

It's a big base with lots of different terrain and lots of game. If you need more info just shoot me an email.

Filled my G-8 tag saturday morning, and hunted with A-33 the rest of the day with no luck not going out this weekend but maybe next weekend.
I hunted area 29 Sunday morning but the grass and leaves was to dry had several stalks but no shots. As I was walking back to the 1st gate I saw a mounatin lion about 350 yds going towards the hills in the flats.
