Try Coalinga, Greenfield, Hollister, Parkfield or Paos Robles.
San Benito Co, Monterey Co and San Luis Obispo Co have the most pigs per sq mile... Find a guide and go out to learn the ropes...

upper cotton wood near los banos, which is right next to san luis resivore off of HW 152. steep terrain and only a few pigs are out there. read the regulations on the dfg page. good luck! I may be out there at the end end the a zone season. Oh yeah, you can only hunt pigs there during the A zone deer season.

Keep in mind only 5% of all wild pigs are harvested on public land in Cal. You can download from Cal F&G a booklet on public land that has some pigs. Lake Snoma has an archery only special season but you need a boat.You might get real lucky and find a landowner that will let you hunt his property. In Cal pigs are valuable and landowners often lease there land to private clubs like Wildernes Unlimited or Golden Ram. Many land owners allow private guides to use their land for a fee. If you are in texas different story lots more pigs and ean cheap access on private land. If your in Argentina or Australia it might even be better.

Good Luck;

Congraulations! Public land pig harvesting is dam tough and you saved $800 on average because you didn't use a guide plus it sure wasn't canned hunting! Not many hunters can say that per Cal F&G statistics that number would be less then 500 a year not bad at all.

Lefty, whatever else you want to say about guided hunts and private property hunts, the majority of hogs harvested on private land are definitely NOT canned hunts. BigHorn Ranch and a couple of others aside... most of it is free range as it gets. Unfortunately, the majority of public land offers either nominal habitat (feed and water) or extreme access. Get a decent piece of farmland in hog country, and it's all you can do to keep the hogs away.

I agree with the kudos to anyone who's taken a hog on public land, though. I've yet to so much as get a shot, and I'm tickled just to spot them on public ground, so I know how tough it can be.

Congrats! Nice hog. I have done a lot of quail hunting there back some time ago. I believe that there are more pigs in these areas than in the past several years. with all the rain fall this year there are more signs of pigs. Were you using a scope? Great shot. My brother refuses to hunt public lands. He hunts on private property were you see pigs all the time) But... the pigs on the property are becoming more and more scares do to mountain lions.

Just to clarify Spec I hunt on WU property and its not canned. I was refering to places such has Bighorn ranch. Guided hunts are not canned they tend to be a sure bet if the guide can hunt near barley fields. Hunting with dogs is not a sure bet but a good pack makes it an excellent possibility. I would like to try public land hunting maybe at Lake Snoma so I can take my dad since only immediate family can hunt on WU property.
I agree with you about the disadvandage of public land hunting it's tough but it can save major dienero.

I would love to see evidence of a Mountain Lion takeing a pig, genrally the pigs bunch up and defend each other and the Lions learn it hard and early. If they are scarce they have moved on due to lack of feed or hunting pressure. The only corilation between Lions and Pigs is the dwindeling Deer population due to the fact that a Lion will take a deer, eat bury it for munching the rest of the week and along come the pigs to root it up and force the Lion to go kill another deer. Lions hurting the Pig population...I don't think so. In fact everyone I have talked to around these parts say the pigs this year are the thickest they have ever seen and borders on extreme overpopulation.

Bigbubbadaddy found a few pig skulls on the east end of 25 at FHL. He said it looked like a cougar's work and where the cat munched on them. I saw the skulls he brought back and some had some nice tooth punctures in them.

Wouldn't be much of a chore for a cat to jump on the back of a lone pig and snap it's neck like they do deer. If you've ever watched deeer fight they can get pretty nasty with them hoofs.

a cat will kill a hog just as quick as a deer.....not all hogs run in groups and I have yet to see hogs bunch up to protect one of their own......they scatter quick..I haven't seen a cat on hogs but have seen cat tracks on heavilly traveled hog paths.........and I've seen coyotes gang up on a hog.......as far as hurting the hog poulation........thats like trying to put a hurt on the rabbit population.

Upper Cottonwood seems to be average 1 hog a year.

Hunted there once and not sure I want to be back. Target shooting starts at 7 a.m. Those idiots have not read JHO posts that some hogs there were taken at 8:30a.m.

And please, do let's our civic duties. Don't leave trash and take a trash bag and pick up some you'll find along the way.

in respose to bgh831. I am talking about the private land I hunt. I think the land owner knows what he is talking about and has seen a lot of lions on his property (recently), as well as half eatin pig carcus. My 2 cents
