Any tricks on focusing a D100 in low light @ night

Having trouble with the D100 focusing in low light and at night. The light on the auto focus assist is not quite enough to focus very far at night. Can set the camera on manual focus for the distance I think would work but close isn't quite enough for some pictures.

Been looking for a 20mm fixed focus lens, but pretty spendy for me. Any ideas?

Are you using a tri-pod? Which focus point are you using? You might try switching to a single focus point and put it on the brightest source of light.

Also faster glass will focus better.
