Anybody ever make a spur necklace or hat band?

I'm still saving up my spurs to finish a necklace. I've got enough for a hat band so maybe I'll do that for now. Has anyone made a hat band or necklace from spurs? If you did, what did you use for the lace? What kind of beads or other stuff did you include? I've got som leather lace I'm using and some fake ivory bone from a craft shop for spacer/filler. I've tried some colored beads but I'm not sure if I want to keep them on the necklace.

Post any pics of your necklaces or hat bands too.

I've never tried it but with my sucess turkey hunting it would probably take me 50 years to get enough spurs to complete it.

I've thought about using the wingbones from the toms as beads. Clean the small bone (radius, I believe) as you would if you were gonna make a call then cut it in short segments. That keeps the necklace all turkey except for the rawhide.

There was article in an issue of the NWTF magazine about a year ago. I think I kept it (wishful thinking as far as my hunting is concerned). I will try to find it.

Jessie, I haven't done anything like that myself either. I just ended up putting all my spurs on a display board.

yep, I have found the best way to cut the spurs off the legs is to use a dremel tool. Makes a quick clean cut and you can switch tips to polish the spurs.

After cutting the legs, I take a coat hanger and push the marrow out of the center of the bone and then coat in borax for a couple of days making sure to get it in the center of the bone to dry everything up.

Some folks take the skin off their spurs, I like to keep it on mine. I then take clear coat and spray it on the spurs giving time to dry and then spray again. I generally put 5-6 coats on.

Final touch is to take an extra fine point sharpie and write the date and birds stats on the back side. Then, one or two final coats of clear sprayed.

I use leather bootlace or the leather cord found in the craft stores by the indian stuff. I also add some wooden beads and some synthetic bone looking beads.

In this picture I have also attached a beard that I hot glued in the shotgun shell that was used to kill the bird. I knocked the primer out and hot glued a barrrel swivel in the primer hole for attaching to the necklace.

gobblestopper, cool necklace.

Don, That article was in the January/Febuary issue. I'm still trying to get enough for a hat band.

Howdy Fellers,

i have been saving the spurs from birds i've killed for many years and used to have several beard and spur necklaces made up but had some type of parasite get into them and they chewed the beards to bits and they all fell apart
<

i still have one hanging on the inside of the door in my gunsmith shop that i used a leather boot lacing as the string and then glueing the beards in shotgun hulls(used just the brass) with beads seperating the spurs and beards , it covers about a 30 inch circle on the door . one of these days i will try to get a decent picture of it to post sometime
on the hull casing i used an engraving tool to put the particulars such as the date/time , turkey weight , gun and shot used as well as the distance the bird was taken

here is a scan of the spurs i have put on one string after the parasites made hash of the beards , they even eat part of the spurs but i managed to catch it before they eat them all to pieces
<

there are more on the leather string but this is all i could get to fit on the scanner bed
<

i have several more sets of spurs yet to cut off from the legs that i've been saving over the last few seasons but somehow never find the time to work on them ....lol

Take Care ,
