Due to the fire im curious if other people are having second thoughts about hunting in Los Angeles National Forest (LANF) this year and was curious on peoples thoughts on if its viable to hang-on to that A31 tag this year...

as per the poll above:

scenario 1) should i trade in my late season archery only tag (A31) in L.A.N.F. for a A32 tag (D13 area)

scenario 2) should i trade in my late season archery only tag (A31) in L.A.N.F. for a D14 tag

scenario 3) should i keep my late season archery only tag (A31) in L.A.N.F. and hope that it opens up, and that there are some non-charred areas left after this hideous station fire.

----------------------

Separate question - to be answered in the forum:

-- Is it ethical to even hunt in the LANF "IF" the forest does open up, should we stay away in hopes of better populations next year, as much as I like to hunt I question whether its ethical to hunt in this area considering the already enormous loss of forest flora and fauna (animals) who have taken the brunt of this horrific and tragic event. -- thoughts?

cool guys thanks for the responses so far -

I know D14 is already open and the only reason i suggested it is that D13 is still in pretty bad shape since the since the "day fire" in 2006 (yes 06) - there have been other fires as well since then; and a lot of the low country is a wasteland. (which is why i was considering exchanging my a31 for a d14 [big bear] tag... got till the 26th to figure it out!

I also visited parts of LANF, over the couse of several days and what i did see looked very very bad... everything on the back side of the forest (near Acton) is toast :(

looking forward to hearing from others on this issue...
InciWeb the Incident Information System: Current Incidents says its %90 + contained now - could be quite a while before the forest is open at all.

ALSO : does anyone also share the point on ethics at the bottom of first post (or would like to comment on it)?

I wish you guys luck with ANF being closed from Interstate 5 all the way to the border of San Bernardinon National Forest, their is nowhere for you to hunt. A good portion of the roads in the Eastern section (Angeles Forest Highway, and Highway 2) will most likely be closed for a year. All the guardrail posts burn't down, and with the lack of brush to stop erosion, good portions of the roads get buried by dry landslides. With the forecast calling for "El Nino" this winter, and a lack of vegetation to prevent erosion, I envision massive road washouts also. I hate to be so gloomy but, reality is what it is.

dont know - think kit fox might have a point -- im thinking its going to be real ugly as well - im starting to think that perhaps an AO tag may be the best solution - at least you would be able to hunt (archery) several D zones for a longer time - think the A32 or D14 are not that good -- but according to the fs the fire wont even be contained until the last week of September, you would think that they arent exactly going to just open up everything again - id rather play it safe - and at least get some hunting in... rather than none.
