This is an area where most if not all the elk are on private ranches, who lease out to guides or don't allow any hunting of any kind. The public land in the area doesn't hold the elk, they cross the public land once in a geat while. It is always fun to see them near the old bus barn near the Pozo Saloon. And there are some nice bulls, but like I said they are on private property and around here "it ain't healthy to poach or tresspass..."
If you are serious about hunting these tule elk, try Twisselmans or Lost Arrow outfitters. But, be sitting down when they mention the price...
The elk are on some of the public land and the state has purchased quite a bit in the area, but once the pressure starts the elk do move off the area and onto private ground which explains the lower hunter success. Fish and Game split the hunt into two periods to lessen the pressure in hopes that the elk would come back onto the public ground. The unit biologist is a great guy and can give you as much detailed information as you want. Let me know and I will give you his number.
