I am toying with the idea of a cow elk hunt for my son. I figure I might be able to get the same price more or less has a Texas exotic hunt but more meat and less drive. I checked the internet and for cow elk and saw a huge range of prices. I am looking for a fair chase hunt my son is in great shape and can hike vs his old man who would sound like a dying bear. I was wondering if anyone has experience with an elk outfitter in the rocky mtn states. I am not sure how much meat the average cow elk yeilds off the top it would be about 25% of its weight prior to butchering but I could be off. I would be open to a tresspass hunt on private land. My son is not interested in archery so that route is closed.

Thanks;

cow hunts go for $1000 to $1500 here in western wyoming. You would get 100-200# of meat from a cow, depending on it size. Cheapest tags are the reduced price cow/calf tags which are leftover, about $300 for a NR, check out units 84,85,75 type 6. For unit 75 you don;t need an outfitter, is an easy road hunt, migration dependent.

$1000-$1500 for a cow???? That makes Colorado's outfitters look cheap LOL! $750 seems to be the going rate for a 3 day guided cow hunt out here.

Thanks guys. Unit 75 sounds tempting the problem is I have to put in my vacation request in advance and its a long drive if the weather in the mtns is warm and the elk stay up high. I imagine unit 75 gets a lot of pressure but I could be wrong. There was one Colo outfitter that had a $400 one day guided cow wlk hunt. I should of bookmarked him and see if he is known at JHO. Keep the ideas comming.
