I was mostly interested in the Stockdale area and it seems there is some sort of battle ongoing with local landowners and trespassing. I dont even want to mess with that. The Williams Hill area is down toward Liggett and it seems to be foot access only (good) but very rugged. Ligget might be a better option if driving that way.
stockdale mountain used to be a great place to hunt......but now it's a good wy to get a ticket.....can't say I blame the land owner as the last few times I hunted there it looked like a garbage dump......same way with curry mountain access........trash everywhere.......unfortunately for curry mountain I don't beleive it's hunters that are trashing it......
The Williams Hill BLM country sucks, its straight up and down, all brush, with little water and even less critters, no trails, no tracks. I think that's why it's BLM. That's what us locals think anyway. Maybe one OK buck a year out of there. I've got all the maps and know the area very well. It might hold a few pigs when the barley comes to head in May down along the farming fields, but I'll bet the pigs stay down on the bottom on private ground. FHL holds the pigs, the terrain on Liggett is much more to their liking. Just my opinion of course...Deedy
Good points all.
The Williams Hill area used to be very good, but now it is getting trashed and there are too many poacher/trespassers(like many areas bordering choice private ranches) and OHV's, sneaking onto the private land. The Stockdale, New Idria and Curry Mountain public areas are all having the same problems. And the reaction by locals is to have LEO respond more and write more tickets.
All these public land areas mentioned are very steep, very brushy and are marginal at best for game animals. They tend to hole up in the nasty stuff and feed or water on the much more fertile ranches at night.
Just my personal experience from the past 30 years hunting this area...
Around 7 years ago, I remember my co-worker went wild pig hunting in Wildcat Canyon???? a BLM property near Fort Hunter Liggett. He said that it was way too brushy and they could NOT penetrate the very thick brush. Like Deedy said, there are NO trails and the brush is just too thick and impenetrable. He ended up just going back to his vehicle and going to FHL. Again, like Deedy said, the wild hogs are resident in FHL and they are there. You just have to do your homework. If you get good advice from some local like Deedy, you will be better off. God Bless and 'Nuff said.
