I'm thinking of getting one that I could mount on a variety of rifles. I'm looking at the Tactacam, seems like it's form factor is better than a GoPro and mounting is easy. Any thoughts?
The wide-angle aspect of the GoPro is a little tricky to use for anything but a super
close shot. And aiming it through your rifle scope, especially without the gopro LCD
screen, it's hard to get the eye relief distance right. It's probably do-able, but you
might need the newer GoPro where you can turn off the wide-angle aspect. I think
a company called RageCam will also mod your GoPro to have a normal or even zoom
lens, and even an IR lens for night video.
But anyways.. I worked around it with my iPhone.
I made an iPhone rifle scope cam, right before I was due for an upgrade on my phone.
(in case the recoil shattered my screen or buggered the electronics somehow)
Turned out okay... but not too practical for an actual hunt when I have to actually
aim and shoot via a phone screen. But, it was a cool DIY project that worked.. and
was cheap. Here are some pics and a video.
I have used the same Contour Roam for several years and the HD video and stills are solid. Looked at length at the GoPro but it was pretty bulky and the side by side video comparisons were identical or had Contour slightly ahead in terms of video quality back when I reviewed. The Contour is roughly the general shape and size of a role of quarters.
Unfortunately I haven't mounted on my rifle or shotgun only because I have been pleased with the video taken from my baseball hat mount which has the view of everything I am looking at. Post some video when you get something.
