Hi,

I just bought a hog call to see if they work. Has anyone tried one? Any luck?

Bill,
I've been told that some of the yote calls will actually work on hogs but I've never tried it myself.

I'm always afraid that I may do more harm than good.
Good post though, I'm looking forward to seeing what folks have to say.

I have never used one, nor seen one, but one of my roommates in college used one.

He seemed to be able to call in hogs at every party/bar we went to.

Mac,

There are a couple of threads on this topic in here if you do a search. Seems like the reviews were mixed. I haven't really used one, so can't speak to it firsthand.

No experience. But from what I've read, they don't really "call them in" so much as "stop them from runnin." You know, they're trotting away and you give a grunt... they stop for just long enough to squeeze the trigger.

Then again. I don't know. But that's what "Boar Hunting in Ca" talks about using them for.

I am hoping that the call will stop a pig dead in his tracks. Even better would be if they would come out of thick brush to see who's making the noise.

I am going to try it out on the pigs I am seeing in Sunol. I see them every other day or so ... I will let you know how it goes.

I must say, however, that I haven't got a clue as to how much grunting I can get away with. I know you are supposed to be kinda subtle ... But I can't help but think about my first experience with a duck call. I blew it carefully and got no response. Then I blew it like hell and huge flocks of birds started coming in.

I was on the POR last month on Tejon and was talking to Tony the new ranch security (ex-cop/game warden) and he was headed out after the POR to do some yote huntin'. He told me that when he was calling in the yotes he would turn around and have pigs behind him just standing and staring at him. I asked if he was using a distress call or what? He looked at me and smiled and said no that all he was doin' was howling for the yotes and that pigs would appear from an area he had just come from and had seen no pigs or sign in. So all you headed to the SLAM keep that in the back of your mind and if you score,

I'll take my Ham smoked please

That makes sense about the Yote call.
The way I heard it though was that a rabbit distress bugle can be made to sound like a squeeling piglet and that the Hogs would rush toward it in small bursts and investigate as they moved closer.

I sure would love to see this done.

Do javalinas count? We were using the Johnny Stewart piglets
in distress call to bring yotes in in AZ. After about a couple of minutes
calling, two javees come charging in through the mesquite from behind
us. If I hadn't moved to turn around to see what the commotion was, that
pig would have run over the top of me.
