We took this 5x5 day 2. Chased a herd of 15 bulls all day Saturday. In the herd was a 7x7 but they were literally 100 yards into one of the only TA'S that were not hunt able. Biggest tule I had ever seen. Had a great time my brother-in laws 2nd elk hunt in 4 yrs and 2nd bull
We got onto a herd of monsters on day one, and I missed 3 shots on a bull at 400+ yards. I then proceeded to throw a full blown 3 year old temper tantrum. No joke. Went out back of base and realized my rifle was WAY off. Sighted it back in and got back into business. JTA6498 made the call of the century and we headed down south a few units and ended up running into that same herd again only this time they were in an archery only area with no cover. We low crawled into a good position and waited them out for the afternoon. Pretty amazing sight to see. Tall grass with 10+ sets of elk horns sticking out of it. We decided that this was the spot to set up for the next morning. Got up and went out the next morning and there was the 5x5 and 2 decent bucks hanging out with each other. With the brush and other cover, the only shot he provided me was the old texas heart shot. I thought I had missed him again as he non chalantly walked across the road. jeff then noticed that his stomach was hanging out. We called the game warden and he told us to put another round in him and I did and he took a dirt nap. I am done with all copper bullets that dont have a hollow point. The teflon tipped bullet didnt even expand. Good news is that I didnt ruin any meat putting a copper bullet through his bung hole. I'll post more pics later after I get some time.
All true story. Out of all the times I have been to FHL, this was best trip as far as wildlife. We saw elk, deer, hogs, turkey, bobcats, yotes, the whole nine. Not many places you can see that many free roaming species on public land. As for the Texas heart shot, entrance wound was 1" left, center mass on the 2 hole. Pretty wild. And the tough dude still went about 400 yrds till Mikey put another round on him, all while his guts were hanging out. Elk are truly majestic creatures. Hopefully I can draw a CA tag some day. Now just got to wait 5 months till the draw...... And by the by, can CA offer a damn late season deer tag at FHL in December for god sakes!!! God there are some monsters floating out there in that late season.
