For all you hunters with kids applying for deer tags.. Apprentice hunters can apply for a premium hunt choice on 1st deer tag obviously. They ARE also allowed to apply for a Junior Apprentice hunt (example J12) as their first choice on their 2nd deer tag per the regs. My question is do they have just as good of chance of drawing that J-12 tag as another Apprentice hunter putting J-12 on their first deer tag?

Thanks

Using a second deer application or first has no difference in drawing odds. Each is issued an independent random number. Remember that if a junior draws first choice on either tag, points go to zero next year and the kid is out of the running for the max points shot at J12 the last year before turning too old. Make sure first choice on the first application is for a good enough hunt to be worth be losing points for.

BTW, note that they changed the apprentice to under 18 from under 16 on the given date this year. Two more years....

He is 15 years old with 2 points now. He drew j13 two years ago and shot a doe. I put him in for x9a as first choice on first tag and j12 as first choice on 2nd tag for this year. I always thought somehow the 1st tag has priority over the 2nd tag? Why are adults only allowed to put a premium hunt choice on the 1st deer tag and not the 2nd deer tag? Thanks for the help

The first choice always has priority over second choice. You can put in for premium hunt all 3 choices if you like, you just wont draw them. Say theres a 1000 tags for a zone and 750 people put in for it first choice, all 750 will draw a tag and the other 250 tags will go to some very lucky 2nd tag.

You are not allowed to apply for junior hunts on both. You can use their first application for a premium hunt and the 2nd for a appentice hunt, only if you didn't apply for an apprentice hunt on the first app.

J12 would be a great hunt if they drew. My boys both have drawn j13 and shot deer every time.

I'm sure there are still a lot kids with 5 points, but less max point kids than two years ago. His twin sister spent her 4 points last year on an X zone. Now she's looking for a random J12 tag with 0 points.

I knew two years ago they were upping the age so last year I intentionaly bought my daughter a point last year as a 16 year old to get her in the 5 points as junior this year
