Been looking for some advice on certain calibers for hunting, but everyone seems to favor or shoot 5.56mm or 223 for deer or even wild boar. (Too light of a round) Yes!! bullet placement is the key however, not enough punch.

A man did say let's respect the animals we hunt

After doing some research on certain AR-10 and AR-15

I came to my conclusion that a .300 SAUM will do the trick.
I looked at .325 WSM and .300 OSSM both not enough.

If you are afraid of what the "man" said then get the 6.5 grendel. If you are NOT afraid of the "man" then load up some .223 with 62 barns tsx and try those. Bet you no deer on earth will survive a heart/lung shot at 100yds or less with this load.

these two caliber and the 300 saum are too much gun for deer and pigs unless you are sending them out a ways. 6.5 grendel is more than enough. if you are building it on an ar10, anything in the 308 family will suffice. Remember one thing, AR's burn alot of powder at the range.

Sir or Luckypants, I am not afraid of what the man said. However, .223 at 100 yards or less will probably drop the animal on it's tracks. It may work for you Sir many or all the time however, I do not agree with the .223

I normally do not see a deer less than a 100 yards where I hunt at, maybe in the ML area but I normally pass the deer that I see.

I am not a big fan of the .223 and I've shot thousands of rounds ie: Mil and Civ not enough punch at long distance(s) specially at wildboar or deer.

Sir or Fishspanker,
Per the above statement in regards to the .325 and .300 OSSM. not enough for maybe what I was looking. I agree with what you mentioned with the 6.5 grendel. I have a friend who swears by it..

I have always been a fan of the Magnum caliber rifles, the only rifles that I own that are not magnums is a .308, 6mm-284 I own two diffrent .300 Win Magnums. I have always been curious of owning a AR-15 or AR-10 in a Magnum Caliber

I agree with the magnums burning a lot of powder when shooting or reloading. Last year I used .308 on a couple of hogs and did drop a few and in other cases did not drop on the spot ranging from 387 yards to 249 yards away.

Just trying somthing new I suppose with the AR's.

I appreciate your feed back Sir.

I don't know about you but I would say most folks who use an AR to hunt big game because of the brush type condition. I would personally NEVER hunt big game with an AR in wide open area. That is why I said no deer will survive a shot with the load above under 100yds.

Also, the other assumption to using an AR for "brush" type condition is to quickly follow-up on your shot. I can't see how this is achievable with .308 or even a grendal with the heavier recoil.

I treat every weapon as a tool. Use the right tool for the job and you will be succussful.

Anything in the .308 family of cartridges makes a good hunting round. .243 win, .260 rem, 7mm-08, .308, .338 federal, .358 win etc.
What do you specifically want to hunt with the AR? I dont know if all of these are offered in an AR platform though.
With these cartridges you really have your bases covered, from as light as 55gr in the .243, up to 250gr in the .358

Good morning Sir or DirtyDave,
I mainly just hunt pig and deer and a few coyotes here and there nothing bigger than that.

I am just a bit curious to purchase an AR in a Magnum caliber since I already own a few bolt action rifles, and a friend is so into the AR types. I guess it's just another toy to add to my collection or to just own something just a little diffrent.

Ar10 in 308 will be great. I wish they came in 30 06 though since you can put a 220 grain bullet with pretty good result. Not sure what a 220 grain bullet would do in a 308. I like the option for the heavier bullet. I do like my 5.56 though, only good for small game though.
