Ok so I asked what caliber I should get on cal guns for a AR hunting rifle big enough for black bear but small enough that it won't do too manage damage while hunting coyote/ bobcats. truelly I want to get the opnion of hunters not just gun guys. So the question is what caliber do you guys suggest for my new AR platform hunting rifle?

I don't think there is a "perfect" caliber for what you want. But if I had to pick one caliber it would probably be 6.5 grendal or 6.8spc. Use barnes bullets for yogi and everything esle for varmints.

yea I was thinking the 6.8spc myself because its about the same as a 270. What's up with the Barnes bullets? Is it really that much better?

Yes. Ask any "real" killers and they'll tell you to use barnes. Just make sure to use lighter bullets. Example would be to use 110grns for 6.8spc instead of say 130.

I shoot a 300WM in a browning and use 130grns barnes ttsx. Velocity is pushing 3700fps and pretty much everything gets vaporized. Complete pass thru from end to end. Doesn't matter if it's a 400lb bear or 80lb antelope.

If you use 110grn ttsx it will also pass thru from end to end.

6.5 Grendel I have it out and shoots wonderfully. Very Accurate. Just my 2 cents.

I chose 6.8 over 6.5 when I build mine just because at the time 6.5 factory ammo was not very available and I do not reload. I've heard lots of good stuff about the 6.5 but am very satisfied with my 6.8. I have the Bison Armory upper 18" barrel with 1:11 twist. So far my gun shoots better with the 85 gr barnes TSX from Silver State Armory. It took everything from ground squirrels and coyote to deer and pigs of all size. All shots were more or less around the 100 yard range.

I have done a lot of research for the last 4 months for my build. With everything i have read (some times hours every night). There isnt much havent read about AR variances at this point. Velocity of the 6.8 is pretty good but down range energy is poor. From 100 to 300 yards you loose almost half your energy. Keep em close and you should be fine Proper shot placement should do away with any knock down power worries. However, for my own built I have once again decided to go with the 308 for this very reason. You should check out some manufacture ballistics charts to know your limitations on bigger game at long range. Have fun!
