Wanted to get some opinions on each hunt as I have max elk points as a resident. Both offered 3 tags (2 max, 1 random) but OV had 112 max point applicants while FHL only had 25 max applicants. Why? Application numbers have been about the same the last 3 years. My odds of drawing a tag against 25 guys is way better than against 112. I've heard that access to the FHL can get screwed up sometimes but is there another reason?

I have a goal of shooting the triple crown (Tule, Rosie and Rocky Mountain) with my bow and at 51 years old I'm not looking to stay in the game another 15 years. I've hunted both areas but wanted to see what others thought of these 2 herds.

Thanks in advance. Joe

Why? Because they advertise these great dates and after the app period they switch the dates to Oct or Nov and blame it on training. The off-limits areas can make the hunt tougher once the elk get pressured. If you are in the max point pool you have better options.

Didn't realize it was that much of a gamble. I plan on chatting with F&G about their policy if hunts are cancelled/moved. Wonder if there is recourse to turn the tag in and get the pref point.

I have seen them advertise the hunt in late Aug/early Sept, then move it to Dec! It is a coin toss as to whether or not the dates stay as initially proposed. For sure a good hunt if all areas are open and dates don’t change, but that is not set in stone.

I'm pretty sure that 449 FHL hunt has been pushed to different dates just about every year now for quite a while. Not sure why, but the other hunts have usually been fine.

I think FHL will be kind of sketchy this year though. The base isn't doing the military only draw they normally do.

Also the command has yet to authorize hunting next season, you can't even apply for a permit yet.

Hopefully they open it back up. I'm sure you'll have a good hunt if they do, just not sure how much you want to stress if/when the hunt will happen.
