Well it has finally happened, I have taken my first archery pig. I posted a story about a pig hunt that went wrong about 2 months ago and said I would post if all the lines and dots met up.

I was walking in to my deer stand on the south side of the property. We have not spotted any pigs on this part of the property yet. I am sneaking through the cedar trees and caustiously walking to the stand not to spook any deer that might be in there early. I make it to the thickness of oak trees and here some movement by my stand. Not sounding like a deer and not knowing the pigs have made it to this stand, my first thought was an armadillo. I knock my aroow just in case and about that time I hear a bunch of snorts. "Crap there are pigs less than 30 yards" and I can't see them because of my position. I slowly make it to my knees and count 10 hogs, but can't get a clear shot.

Knowing I have to be quiet and very mobile, I decide to drop my back pack and quiver. In SLOOOOOWWWW motion I make a 5 yard sneak to a clearing between to oak trees. I pick out the boar and draw my bow, then realizing I need a tree to climb, so I slowly let off my draw. Just in case I need a plan B and climb a tree. I find a good tree I can climb to my right about 10 feet with a big limb about 6 feet up. With an emergency route in mind I find the boar and draw back again. He makes his way behind a cedar tree, so I pick out a 70-80 pounder about 22 yards away. I am looking throught my peep sight and find the 20 yard pin on my Trophy Ridge sights. I set the pin just behind the front shoulder and pull the trigger on my release. As I watch the arrow hit right where I was aiming all the hogs run to my left and follwoing far behind ,is the little guy with my fletchings barly sticking out of the entrance hole.

Now I am very excited and didn't realize that the boar did not take off when all the crashing and thrashing was happening. I look to my left and see the 150 lb boar glaring at me with a death look. He hauls butt directley at my and that is when I drop my bow and monkey myself in the tree I picked out before the shot. To make a longer story short, I was in the tree for 30 minutes getting laughed at by the boar and didn't make it down until my dad showed up on the 4 wheeler after a phone call to him. We bust out the flash lights and look for blood for about and hour and notta, none, zilch.

It is 9 in the morning the next day and we are out looking forever to find this great eating sized hog. Still no blood, no broken arrow and no sign. I am disgusted because I have never lost a big game animal I have shot. My Pops decides to take me to lunch and call it a hunt.

Needless to say 2 days later I see every buzzard in the county flying in the area the pig could have been. I make a hike to where they are perched in a big bald oak tree and below them lays my bacon, sausage and hams that was spoiled, eaten and barely left.

I hate seeing good meat go to waste

Good story, Ridnhigh. Too bad you lost the critter, but sometimes it happens. Every big game hunter will do it sooner or later, and for most of us it will happen more than once. If you gave it your best shot and put your tracking skills to the test, then there's not much else you could've done.

Pigs don't always bleed real good, especially if they're fat and healthy. It's a tough trail.

Good luck on your next one... at least you know they're in your area!

The only animal I every lost was a fat dry sow about 200lbs, shot at 10yards. She turned tail and ran across under the fence onto a paid only ranch, where I could not follow. I crawled for hours on my hands and knees under the manzanita. I gave it my best, and that's all i can do...
It happens, especially with a bow on pigs, as they have the plate of armor along their side.

Armadillo?????? Were you in Texas by any chance?????[/b]

Actually pretty dang close. I now live in S.Oklahoma about 15 miles from the Texas border. Thias white tail hunting is a whole new can of worms. No mountains, no spoting scope, just no fun in my book.
